Fair to middlin' of nowhere

As the gravy dribbled down his chin
the mashed potatoes oozed
out the corners of his mouth
as he tried to make
intelligible conversation.
He spit flecks of food
the more excitedly he spoke.
Though he appeared to be
wearing more of the food
than he was eating,
it didn’t seem to matter at all.
He was completely oblivious
to the scene he made
and those that stared.
He shoved an entire roll
in his mouth and then
pulled it back out again
to add the forgotten butter.
He would occasionally swipe
at his face with a napkin that
did more smearing than clearing.
His eyes sparkled with joy
as he wallowed in our
Thanksgiving feast.
And for our “special “son
We were thankful most of all

Beautifully written and very well too.  Could easily visualize the scene and loved it - a perfect combination in poetry.

enjoyed,

A different kind of writing for you, but it worked, big time.

If they give you ruled paper write sideways.

Thanks guys!  I did a search because I thought I had posted it before. I wrote it back in 2010. Jimmy I'm glad you commented because this is one of the few I have written that isn't autobiographical.

Thanks Jo
Glad you liked it! Not sure I'm hitting the nail on the head though, I let a couple of students read it and they thought it was funny (not where I was going at all).

The final gratitude for the "special" son, brought this write into a new perspective and actually I was moved. The apparent lack of manners transformed into unconditional pleasure that such a rich dinner provided for this someone "special".

Intense, dear Lori.

Love,
Margherita

Bless your heart Margherita, you know just the right thing to say! I'm so relieved. I feel so blessed to have met you here in the blue room, you always leave me counting my blessings.

Heart tug!!
I grew up with a "special" sister, I know the feeling of joy and love you have so eloquently expressed in this write.

You have given me the highest praise! I was paying homage to "special" families. I am delighted that I hit the mark.  Bless your heart!

This had me in tears, Lori.  Then reading the comments, I thought I had misunderstood it, but from what you said, I see I didn't.  The fact that it isn't autobiographical, makes it even more touching and compassionate.  I can hardly see the blurred words I am typing.

What a beautiful Thanksgiving gift you have given, to those with "special" children!

Thank you Owl,
I know not all "special" children (young and old) make such spectacles of themselves. I was trying to show expressions of joy, innocence and excitement. According to JL, I managed to get the drift of things enough close enough. Bless your heart for the tears, I can't think of a better compliment!

Lori, let me guess... it's about a baby?
Well, maybe not a baby but about a little kid

Well, more like a little kid in an older person's body, Gale. I was trying to honor families with special needs children. But I did take some of the behavior from a very precocious nephew.
