   It's After Twelve O'clock

It's after twelve o'clock
and I've listened to the news
now Johnny Carson's on
so I know,
I've made it through the day.

I think I'll write a letter
no time could be better then
while I'm waiting for
the new Tom Synder show.

Well it's two a.m. I think I'd best
be going,
but first I'll  ask why
the light is glowing
behind my father's bedroom door.

He said he's just resting
he's allright,
So I'll be getting
on to bed.

It's four fifteen and I awaken,
while I'm up I'll look in
He's still sitting
in his chair
the way I left him.

Yes he's fine he says
Yes he'd like a glass of juice.
so I bring it and I'm off to bed.
At least I know,
we've made it through the day.

It's twenty after five and I
think I hear a noise,
can't sleep until I check,
everythings the same.

Now it's close to six
I say I may as well get up.
It's a new day
and comforting to know,
he's made it through the night.

January 1981

My  beloved Dad's last days. I shall always remember him with love and devotion.

Homage to your beloved father---so beautifully written. I recall with deepest love and fondness the final days of my father's life.

Such a wonderful poem to mark one of his last days. He was very fortunate to have you there to look after him . . . Moving piece, Jo . . .

If they give you ruled paper write sideways.

You tug at my heartstrings with this deep and loving poem in memory of those special days when your dear Father prepared for his transition. Your loving care was no doubt extremely precious to him, dear Jo.

Love and hugs.

Thank you Margherita, I have been fortunate to have been sitting by my mom in 1975 and my dad in 1980 and with my Husband in 1995. It is a joy to be with a loved on the last leg of their journey. No one should die alone or in a strange place. jo

You made me blink at the mention of Johnny Carson...so I figured before I got to the end that you, dear one, were remembering something from a while ago.

In 1988, I went through many of the same moments as you.

The way you brought those moments together, in such an ordinary-seeming way, touches the reader profoundly.
