in the shadows

Dragons will dance tonight
acknowledging the gift of flight
by staying on this Earth,
until liberated in the coming
crystalline moment of Midnight.

More demons walk the world this year;
knowing well there is no heaven
there is no hell;
is it fear that keeps your lights on,
shaking if they ring your bell,
or do you welcome them?

They stride
before a human tide of hubris and theology,
abstract frivolity,
optimistic lifelines of the desperate and the hopeful,
platitudes of desperately semi-celibate mortal men
dressed in brocade gowns,
confronting them
from now until Walpurgis Night
when Northern World again awakes
and Mother Earth's lifeblood
flows to bud.

It takes my breath away
some times
when I can slow my eyes
to see through each disguise,
to catch their movements deep in shadows,
slipping in and out of sight
tickling seams of consciousness,
binding dreams of righteous nonbelievers
through each year's sweaty fitful night.

Thanks for the Halloween gift, love it. I'm saving it for my great granddaughters who are already telling me stories about Mother Nature. The wisdom if children can be surprising.
