I never said, goodbye, did I?
Just our cold kiss.
Did you wonder why I wasn't there?
Did you think I didn't care?
They said that you were unaware
in your final sleep,
but I knew that you were there.
When I spoke to you,
I saw a silent tear
that left your eye.
Was that our last goodbye?

No, it wasn't, was it?
You knew I needed more.
So you came again, in my dream,
to the flowered verge
by the little stream.
Is that you, son? You were saying,
as they were laying
you down among the roses.

You weren't old;
your hair had lost its grey,
and you smiled a toothy smile
they way you used to.
I kissed you again,
and it wasn't cold.
You said, what a beautiful day,
we should go on holiday,
to Cornwall again.
I tried to smile a lie
and hide my pain.
But you saw my tears,
my crushing fears,
and knew those days
were gone forever.

You put your hand on my cheek;
kissed me with your eyes.
It hurt so much to wake,
but I knew that you'd come back
to say goodbye.

Okay guy, this touched me deeply. Anything else I might say could not mean more than what I already said. Okay, I'll try. This is a very sensitive piece of writing that many people will be able to relate to. I most certainly did.

Deeply touching.  Goodbyes are tough.  Not having a chance for one is even worse.  When that happens I think our minds strive to give one, whether through dream or some other means, as if our only chance to ever know peace again depends on it.

Very beautiful.  I understand this completely.  Although I didn't have parents who wanted a relationship with me, my bond with my beloved horse to whom I belonged for 20½ years and knew him for 2 years before that) was legendary.  I was with him when he went to Heaven at the age of 37½ human years, but he returned in 6 dreams that I knew of - I think there were more before the first one, but that he made sure I didn't remember them in case I was expecting him to be on Earth when I woke up.  I believe he broke me into the dreams gently.
