She held the key
to his heart.
She knew
he would always care.
When she went away,
she kept the key
to his heart
and hid the spare.
Now his dreams
around her swirl
and his heart is locked
against the world.

Oh Ida,
In just a few words you have described my heart's desire. I am privileged to call you my friend.

I like the image of the dreams swirling around her; very ethereal and lovely.  I enjoyed this, Ida.

Thank you all so much for your kind words. I find it intersesting that every reader sees this from his own point of view. Actually there's a rather sad story behind it that I won't go into.

I saw her not wanting his love but making it impossible for him to love anyone else. And then I thought I was crazy (or at least, cynical) as I read the other responses. But reading your response, maybe I wasn't so wrong, after all. *S*

And if I was? *S* Whatever the interpretation, making people feel through your words is a good thing... and you've done just that!

Your understanding is spot on, Ruth, not crazy at all.
