Soul Of A Man

Pain . . .
was like a branding  iron
pressed against my breastbone.
It Hurt.
My heart faltered in mid-beat,
and screamed !

Sunrise, my first without you,
and I lay on your side of the bed
trying to pull your warmth
from the sheets,
the covers,
from your pillow,
with it's lingering smell
of perfume.

My eyes followed the swirls
on the ceiling
trying to see what you saw,
then moved around the room
following the tracks
of your own.

How little
I ultimately knew of you,
when you lay in bed
before rising.

How little, then, did I understand
what losing you would do.

To my heart.
To my soul.

My eyes went back to the door,
to the flicker of motion I'd caught:
There you stood,
slight smile,
sparkled with a tear,
eyes saying, Please
. . .

and I cried.

Like a baby,
I gushed out all the manliness
I ever had,
I threw away all the pretense
of how wonderful I'd be
if you left;
and I cried, and I ran to you,
and held you like life itself,
and swore my soul
had begun to leave,
when I found you gone.

Sunlight,
splashing us through the window -
a new day,
a new world -
the essence of all things
beautiful . . .
but only,
But Only,
with you . . . there.

Ah, there is no hurt like the hurt you have described here, J. Love is a fragile, easily shattered thing, because it involved highly charged emotions. And, after years and years later we still write about it because the hurt is still there.

spiros, Ida, Ms. E and Jerry ...

Thank you all for the kind words.  Kind of interesting how this piece originated, so thought I'd tell you ... Was watching an old cowboy movie and they were branding cattle - the thought came into mind : What would it feel like to have a branding iron pressed against my flesh...?  Well, the first stanza of this "popped" into my mind and shortly after I had the computer booted and let my thoughts run onto "paper".

Now, I have to be honest, some life-experience came into play in the rest of it --- my life, and those of friends, family member experiences observed...

anyway --- that's why the disclaimer "not about me" at the bottom of the page.

thanks for the visit, the words...

This piece touches the heart, dear Jimmy. And how true it is, that a life together with another "chosen one" can be so demanding that desires of "freedom" from the bond enter our thoughts. But in the moment of transition of one, things suddenly change and the missing can become intolerable. I have witnessed this so many times.

You were fire-inspired really, dear Jimmy!

That's one of the things I always admire about your writing, is that it doesn't have to be about YOU per se.  You can start with one idea and put the rest together like a beautiful puzzle.  Always enjoy you!

You have written the agony of loss so well it scorches... or maybe that's just memories blistering my soul. *S* But your words evoked the memories... been there, done that, wore the tshirt to shreds. *S*

Incredible write!!
