faithfully jeopardizing
meaningless laughter when'er
the poet walks the high wire
of poetical wordplay
looking down at his chaotic lines
hoping those who actually read them
can absorb
each and every carefully thought out rhyme
and when he climbs back up on that high wire
trying to balance
free verse, breaking lines perfectly
as to make sense and show continuity
there's a hesitant shuddering gasp
as he measures the tempo with a slight of word dexterity
and other elevated climatic wishes
because secretly, and most secretly at that
the poet has written certain passages
for the one he loves
though never has he declared this love
the poet knows she is aware of his foolish desire
will she brazenly taut certain weak lines
as not being hip enough
and if she will be so crass to do so will
the poet
press forward and begin his dangerous and perilous
ascent into the stratosphere
of his art
his everlasting art aiming a shot across the bow
of her observable charms
will he, or will he not
find the words which are eternally hers to receive
or will the spreadeagle of buffoonery
be his comeuppance after all

We are probaby lucky to be able to have an audience for our poetry. I wonder how many great poets lived and died without anyone reading their work.

Excellent comment, Ida. You are, of course, correct. One thing the Internet (among millions more) has done it has given poets such as we see here at PiP, and other sites, the chance to have people read our words. Thank you for your observant observation.

Hah! There is no doubt that we "are at play," ms. e, and do enjoy what we perceive as good. Thank you for your kind words . . .

I think this says it all about
what one might do to please another,
whether it is realized
or not.

There's a lot to be said for southern charm...
and there's a whole lotta charm 'round south.

Thank you, Karilea, and yes, the magnolia trees are full of that southern charm, at least it seems that way when you are around them when they are blooming. Appreciate the kind words. . .

I've written to charm without success... and succeeded at buffoonery when that was never intended. But... part and parcel of being a poet is that we always pick up the pen again... however far we may have thrown it.

Ah, suthern, we all fall short of our goals I think. And that is as it should be. Always striving for that perfect rhyme or phrase. Thank you for investing in this poem today.
