the poet is the connection
linking here and now to what comes next
the poet is like a spring-fed underground river
his words consumed by those in the know
the poet is a stalwart tree
fed with drops of words and desire
consumed by his Muse
the feminine side of his being
this Muse is like a beautiful bird of inspiration
calming the disheartened
with words to ease the pain and misery
the poet little by little flows into the hearts and thoughts
of those who read him
he can be, with the help of his Muse
an angel, or if his Muse has a really bad day,
the devil incarnate
the poet sows his infinite kernels
into his poems

the other side of the poet

the masses close their eyes to
his message
he, who asks of naught
of life except what keeps his words
alive
the people refuse his Muse-fed talents
the poet settles into a cycle of melancholy
but I say this
you, the poet are the existence of life
you poet carry on
understanding that in the future
your words may be coveted by millions
so you smile
as your fingers fly across the keyboard

Happy Holidays my dear friend!
Your ponderings on the poet and muse ring true. You clearly voice the vague knot I often feel in the pit of my poetic gut.
Well done!

I know you really don't care what I think, but this one merits a reply nonetheless.  Definately one of your best.

Of course I care what you think, Michael. Don't know where you got the notion that I didn't.
