The Tree People

Civilization has been destroyed.
Over its radio active ruins and above the blighted land,
a race of tree people has been living for hundreds of years.
The tree people have evolved an entire culture--
art, languages, literature, mythology, music, everything--
All having adapted to life and travel in the trees.
Many speculations have been made
about whether there is intelligent life on the ground.
Some contend that, since a great creator
has made trees so intelligent life could live on them,
it is ridicules to suppose there could be intelligent life
in any other place than in the trees.
Reaching the ground is beyond the technology of the tree people,
and those who have tried have never returned;
(
though th has been because they liked it on the ground and stayed.)
but some of them, the tree-bound, have written about the possibility
of ground travel on ground ships
and exploring other worlds in cars.

I am with a bunch of school children.
Today the class is going on a special field trip.
They are going to spend an entire day
on the ground.

And they I wake up.

Next time I’ll dream of a civilization
Where they worship cans of V8 Juice.

Jaime

SweetDaddy do all the V8 worshippers have slanted foreheads?  I'd assume slapping themselves in the forehead would continue on with the V8 culture..coulda had one!

"Next time I’ll dream of a civilization

Or perhaps, they will worship an Andy Warhol soup can painting, D.G.?

I like the poem.

Fine poem you got here, and if I could I would live in the trees myself. Well once I get use to heights and bugs that is. Fine writing indeed.
