"Notre Père, qui es aux cieux"
(Our Father, which art in heaven)

There are things
none of us like to talk about . . .like,
a father's hands where they shouldn't be,
at inappropriate times;
a sixteen year old, pretty thing,
never seen again;
bog burial, deep in the Atchafalaya;
gator-rumblings,
bull frogs, and the peal of dying things,
when the moon's just right.

~ ~
The scream of a man being eaten alive.

~ ~

"Collette Adeline Bergeron"

read the blue and white, satin ribbon
laying across the homemade wreath
of twigs, river bark, spider lily and blue iris,
floating on the black, brackish water,
swirling slightly.

". . .la puissance et la gloire,  aux siècles des siècles."
(The power, and the glory, for ever and ever)

~ ~

Mothers have a way of remembering.
A way of honoring their children,
of putting up with everything
husbands do.

But mostly,
mothers have a way of remembering,
a way of honoring a seventeen year old,
a pretty thing,
under a three-quarter moon,
over a brackish, gas-belching bog,
deep in the Atchafalaya . . .

". . .la puissance et la gloire,  aux siècles des siècles."
(The power, and the glory, for ever and ever)

Amen

If this is personal, I am sorry. If it is not, it was a hell of a write.

Thanks for the read and the reply, my friend.
Not personal at all.

Jimmy...A fitting death for a crime that should never happen. I think they all should be tortured and then maybe let the gators and swamp do the rest.
Very touching poem...Paul

Thank you Southern, my friend. Based on something I heard about when I was a kid.  Guess I should add it to my Boyhood Tales

This poem made such an impact upon me.  It's strong and it hits home.  Good one, Jimmy.
