God Bless our Astronauts
(Space Shuttle Columbia 02-01-03 STS 107)

Explorers of space in a shuttle they flew,
Brave souls, astronauts, representing me and you.
Experiments they would run in that tranquil domain
Their love for living they do not refrain.

But there is something they feel they must do,
To advance the humanity searching out in their new school.
To the heavens they fly up to the silence of space
Looking back with huge smiles, at the earth they embrace.

Our future, they will say, is out there in deep space,
Thumbs-up, as they climbed into that shuttle with grace.
Unknown to them, their last steps on earth were made
As they disappear into Heaven, at God’s golden gate.

Poignant tribute, dear JL, to these brave pioneers of space. You wrote with great sensitivity about this very sad page in our space history.
