The Rise and the Fall

I sit and watch the rise and fall –
I see the writing on the wall,
As, on back, in a single breath
A nation is sentenced to death.
On a pale horse, Calamity
Now directs the course of the free.
Still, when those buildings start to sway,
You’re the only one who’ll look away…

...To tell them what they want to hear,
'Cause it's no more than truth they fear;
And all you wield with your tongue
Are but the keys to dying young.
Still, in the end, what's there to say?
We all know Rome burned in a day,
Yet four more years we gift to you
To make our worst nightmares come true.

Oh yes, the misled's voice is heard,
Though it misquotes you word by word...
Those blasphemous lies, misdirected,
Used to defend our dear elected!
All while you laugh behind closed doors,
As unearthly ambition soars;
For one who seems untouchable,
In a land where he makes up the rule.

The rise of one, the fall of all
Sheep answering this lion's call;
While, derelict of principle,
Our entire nation plays the fool...
While pandering to blind trust,
As our dreams are sifted like dust,
We stand in line, once more to lose,
Believing it matters who we choose.

Bravo, Michael. Why is it that so few of us can see what is happening when it has been fortold in so many ways.

And you have certainly hit the nail on the head with this one.  We shake our heads but, of course, as Ida said, it's all been foretold.  It's a shame but we certainly are to blame.

Your message is clear. And I thought the '90s were bad enough.
Thanks,

"Our entire nation plays the fool..."

Enjoyed your write.
Not sure I can comply with this line.
I'll stay away from the hungry lions.

But even fools (twice over) can survive, Michael, if we but have the will and fortitude to know how to reclaim what has been lost.

Fine writing...and though I agree with most of this I still believe it matters because life is about choices and if we choose the one we most closely believe in that is good...James
