I'm a man
who's followed many roads
the road of no contentment
lonely lanes where the staff of life
was nonexistent
I've sped out of control down highways with no center line future
I've kindled fires in hearts
only to snuff them out
taking my flattering voice and my smile
to others within my wake
a man such as I
was convinced the world had dumped on me
now it was payback time
as I traveled my roads, lonely lanes and highways
I was jotting down words
words which eventually became poems
my thoughts transferred onto scraps of paper
napkins
toilet paper
finally carrying around small notebooks
in my shirt pocket
(remember when men's shirts had pockets?)
I was a poet
a very bad poet, but still . . .
it was a start and a way to deal with . . . me
I've sat on creek banks, little pad in hand
describing the moon
the chirping all around me
I've pulled out that little pad in some of the skuzziest
places you never want to go
writing about what I saw
what I heard and many times
what I did
words kept me sane in an insane world
novels came next
but the poet in me remained and grew
today I'm still trying to fine tune
my wordflow
guess I will continue doing that until
I wave to the rhythm of my slumber
shutting my eyes, darkness surround me
as I've writ my last line
words . . .
they saved my life

a way to deal with . . . me

This touched me deeply. Our roads may have been different, but many of us have shared those shoes. And the ending?? Oh, so true... life and sanity.

Fine, powerful writing... a definite keeper!!!

I know you are right, suthern. Most poets have a dark past they have had to deal with the best way they could. Mistakes we make, but the future is all about correcting those mistakes. Thank you for being here.

Succinctly you pen experiences

Excellent write, Jerry.

"I've kindled fire in heart
Only to snuff them out"

Words are powerful, and when a poet abides his heart it's no surprise we tend to sate, pacify, infuriate, and inflict pain upon others without even trying, and in some cases, without even knowing.

Novels may take up some of your time, but being a poet is more than something one just chooses to do.  It's part of you...  it defines you.  You will always be a poet, Jer.  In a dark room, with no light, pen, or paper you would still think poetry.  Your piece here is accurately titled.  Good reading.

Oh, you are so right about the poet being a part of a person. It just is, and will forever be in my case, as it will in yours, Michael, and all other real poets. Thank you for reading and commenting, it is very much appreciated.

Poets! What is it about us poets that we depend on our poetry to get us through the messes we find ourselves in.

Thank you so much Karen.

Understand where you're coming from, Jerry. Poetry has kept me reasonable sound...I think.

Haha I love the "I think," Ida. Sometimes I have my doubts about all this sanity too. Thank you for being here.

Reading this, I found many common threads.
...poet...way to deal with...me...
Yes, writing is in a sense a form of self-examination, introspection, in that process one may find the healing or at the least the means to one.
Liked this one,  Jerry, perhaps closer to mine than I cared to admit.
Cheers,
CG

Appreciate the feedback, CG. Of course poets tend to write about themselves even when they don't think they are, little tidbits of the poets persona will insert itself. Then there are those who use poetry as a form of therapy. That's me. Thanks again for being here.
