Twin Fawns

Dusk falls softly over the forest
a deer slowly enters the meadow
with ears forward and senses alert
she surveys all to ensure safety
then beckons to her spotted twin fawns

Cautiously they advance to her side
timid to be out in the open
they jump at every unknown sound
until their mother nods the all clear
knowing now that they are safe from harm

Exploring as they scamper around
pausing to watch the bubbling brook
as fish jump for their nightly dinner
and a mouse scurries out of hiding
just to be snatched by a silent owl

Twitching their ears they gaze in wonder
at a fox with her kit of five close
coming to drink from the cold clear brook
They envy her fluffy black tipped tail
and the reddish brown of her sleek coat

Hearing the croak of frogs they seek them
not finding for dusk has become night
Running to their mother they listen
to continuous drone of insects
while small feet scurry through meadow grass

Better than a movie, are your drawing words.
Enjoying the forest fawns, enjoying your poem,

You captured the moment in full here, Karen. I was there. You put me there. Thanks for the picture you gave me.

I am so glad you could see the vision...down at our local camp ground there are two deer who have twins quite often...*BIG HUGS*

I am glad I took you there because this poem is based on a true adventure...There is so much in nature we seem too busy to see...I just love to write about it...*BIG HUGS*
