what brought us here
learning things about each other
in brief encounters
and starry-eyed semblance
in the midnight of our dreams
inevitable was it?
predestined and foregone conclusion
we'd meet in the darkness
of rain-drenched words
seeking to cool wounded flesh
reach for simmering pride
trying to understand
our darkness
our black nightmares of yesteryear
confidants
sharing the pain
to ease the guilt
easing the guilt
to lose the pain
that, then, is the price we gladly paid
as we look back
know we have conquered much
a love such as ours
bound by the cement of misery
and doubt
and all the pain in the world
can never be lost
to the vagaries of life's uncertainty
and human remora
we have found a peace
and breathe the quiet air

"know we have conquered much

Does the heart good to have these qualities
in a relationship, or "Happenstance?"

Great write Jerry!

I love how you ended this poem, Jerry.  The peacefulness that is in true understanding and acceptance, is an amazing feeling, and hard to capture in words.  You've done a mighty fine job of it.

Like how the poem concludes in a peaceful state of being, that is often hard to reach.

Appreciate the read and comments, EmmaRose. Yes, peaceful is a state of mind that has been sadly lacking most of my life. I accept it totally and willingly now.

"we have found a peace
and breathe the quiet air"

Wonderful state to be in.  Enjoyed the read that took me there, Jerry, but I exit on a sigh because I know how hard it is to stay there what with life being sometimes the monster that it is.

I know what you mean, Helen, but I am enjoying this peacefulness as long as I can. Thank you for being here.

"The price gladly paid"

That says it all... When you can see where all that anguish gives you a fuller appreciation for what you are sharing with someone now, it's a beautiful thing to behold.  Pain is an excellent teacher... If not always an appreciated one.  That you and your love can relate to eachother's dark pasts priceless.
