The poetry I write,
the novels I have written,
are they but the drooling long-winded, incoherent
mish-mash of an aged man
who has finally understood
the meaning of . . . will I leave a legacy!?

When, by chance,
I make the statement
"I write novels and poetry,"
people's expression
I liken to the thousand-yard-stare
of death-row inmates.

Have I found wisdom
among the trinkets of old age,
and, if so, should I be sharing it with the world
or,
and I hate to think thusly,
do I write in order to justify my existence?

Sometimes I feel we need to write to maintain our existance.

You are probably right, Ida, in my case I lean heavily on that I have to write to maintain what sanity I have left. Thank you for your input.

I'm with you on the maintaining your sanity part. And I feel we have an obligation to share our humble crumbs of truth with each other.  Words are our manna. And your work, my friend, is of substance. It hits you in the gut and stick to your ribs.  You feed your readers well.

I think we write because we 'have to'. Being creative is something like an itch that you unconsciously have to scratch.

I also like the response from people when you tell them you write. For a split second it's as though they're afraid you're going to ask them to read something.

Being a writer has a lot of perks though - who doesn't love to sit and stare into space and when asked what you're doing you can say 'thinking' or 'planning a scene in my next chapter'.

Haha! Gotta love it, Poet deVine, about the staring into space scenario.

Yes, we write because we have it, and THAT is the bottom line. Thank you very much for chiming in on my poem.

I'll admit that was a problem, Chourouk. I'll try again, okay?
