Elvis, Mom and Me

In the saddle of a blue eyed sagging couch
Night passes on as we watch and eat and slouch
Heat keeps pressing, pressing as fans labor on
Fighting with folly with what the sun has spawned
Blades spin in mad trance, yet summer will not retreat
It will not sneak out the window nor be discreet
Yet my mother`s eyes burn slowly and inconsumably
Transfixed in perpetual passion unconditionally

She stares at the t.v. mesmorized
At `Rock and Roll` epitomized
Elvis struts and throbs on the glossy screen
Swiveling his hips, flashing his sneer, oh, what a scene
Like a wild stag, he prances astray
And chases girls, girls, girls come what may
Mom may call him Elvis, she may call him the King
But what is a name if a man can sing

Carefree songs spring forth in ecstatic sound
Satisfaction is comfort to be found
And should the lyrics be pedestrian and null
An enchanted voice will give them body and soul
For Elvis wrote not his own songs, he was but a pimp
Serving up such drivel as `A Song of a Shrimp`

Elvis charms his way as the film passes along
Be it stupid, it is full of joy and song
As the movie draws to an end
A son finishes knowing then
That he must consider his mom a girl again
For she is what she is no matter what she pretends

Loved this; especially the last line!

Yo Earl,

Your choice of font makes this very difficult to read.  Pencil lead is usually black for a very good reason.

Elvis was a very talented person.  It’s a shame he got himself so messed up.

No doubt, the man had talent. It was just to bad he was "used" the way he was. I think it is always interesting to see our parents as human beings, especially our moms as young girls. Well written... and I agree with Bobby about the choice of color... it is somewhat difficult to read. Thanks for sharing.

Good poem. Elvis was very good at singing all different genres and styles of music.
