EVERY MAN SHOULD HAVE A SON

A child conceived, a baby born
parents faces lit with joy
a fervent wish, a silent prayer
the birth of a little boy.

They count his fingers and his toes
their hearts are beating glad
a perfect child in every way
the spitting image of his dad

He coos and gurgles in his cot
this child their hearts have won,
While father looks with unveiled pride
every man should have a son

Parents watch with love filled heart
to see the child’s first tiny smile,
A clutching hand, a sleeping pose
all goes on memory’s file.

Upright he sits in baby’s cot
first tooth break s out its bond
first he crawls then tottering steps
God has waved his magic wand.

Time flashes past on silent wings
and as usualy  is the rule
a tearful face ;a hesitant step
Its the boys first day at school.

Schooldays come then pass beyond
He stands awkward in his teens
He’s at that difficult stage in life
of adolescent in betweens

At twenty one he stands a man
perhaps one day he’ll rise to fame,
yes every man should have a son
to carry on his name.

Very beautifully expressed, dear Lindsay. Yes, I think this is the intimate wish of every man. Of course I might add, that every little son should have a little sister !

Love,
Margherita

Ah, you old softie! Nice when you take a break from humor (although it's great)and show your level of sincerity. Very nicely said...

Dear Margherita, you summed it up very well
my dear, Every son should have a little sister and thank you for stating that.

Hello Mike, yes I have got a soft side but
I'm proud of that fact and I'll bet you have a soft side as well. Thank you.

Vandana, short and sweet but very neat
And I thank you for taking the time to
reply.

God bless you all.

Yo Lindsay,

Sons and/or daughters are both cool, in their own different ways.  I've raised two of each.

Fine writing...I have three sons and I hope every man doesn't have a son or my sons would have a hard time finding a wife...one is already married...James

To my good friends Bobby and James, thank you so much for taking the time to respond.

You are both very fortunate in having family's to carry on the family name.
Good luck to you both.

Lindsay,  Sorry I have not been round about as of late,  but I had to take a moment to thank you for this wonderful write.  I adore my youngest as I get to spend a lot more time watching him grow.
I am not sure how much I am looking forward to his teen years, but we will, like he did, take it one step at a time,

fantastic read.

Thanks Tracey, It's a real blessing to have a son, or more than one and watch them all

grow up and make a place for themselves in life, and hopefully steer them on the right

path. I appreciate you popping in with a kind response. Take care my friend.

Be careful of what you wish for
But to have a little lad
Can be a friend and something more
But don't name your boy Toerag.

Balladeer's mom advised young 'Deer'
And he was often told,
"I wish your dad had listened
And practiced birth control."

Lindsay, truly enjoy reading your poetry. Whenever I  read poetry, stories and even articles I wonder what the authors were thinking or the reason they wrote something and why. I admire those that can write on several different subjects, and how they vary from one emotion to another, as in those that can go from love, memories, heartache to humor or drama. You seem to be able to go from one emotion to another with ease.

Very nicely transfered thoughts to words, Lindsay.  Our sons are like an extension of our selves, a second mirror.

Toerag, I'm so glad that Balladeer's Mum
didn't practice birth control and I'm glad that your Mum didn't either. I enjoy all sorts of poetry but I like rhyming poetry the best, especcially if the meter is correct. I have been confined to a wheel-chair for the last six years so I have plenty of time to sit and think about what to write. I am also in a writer's group who meet once a month here at our place and each poet takes it in turn to suggest a different topic for the following month. They come up with some unbelievable suggestions but it really makes you stretch your poetic powers to come up with something worth reading.

I thank you my friend for your interest and your kind words. Take care.

Lindsay

How did you come up with the name Toerag,
I'm quite intrigued.

I honestly think this is my favorite of yours.  I won't say why, but I will say that I know you are right.  When my parents lost their son - their life was never the same.

Love this and love you,

Really enjoyed reading this, my friend, and you're probably right.  I have one of each and would have taken either/or, or pairs of either/or. Carrying on my name has never been a biggy with me, having children always was and is important to me, and having them grow up into the fine adults they are will carry my name much farther, than a son alone ever could.

So I agree with you in principal - although I will say every man should have at least one of each!

Again, much enjoyed the read, my friend. And I know this kinda got off track...heh, heh.

Lindsay, a young lady at an old poetry site and here had the audacity to say I was a mischievious rascal and incorrigible. Can you imagine? At any rate, she was from Great Britain and penned me a Toerag. Supposedly the above defines a Toerag.
