                Father of a Nation
                     By Billie Cullimore
                                      age 16

               Long ago in history,
               When America was new
            Indians roamed the vast land
            Where the Golden Eagle flew.

A child was born of southern stock
             In the old Virginia state.
Because of war, this gallant lad
               A glory was to make.

            Like every other normal lad
            He hooky played from school.
             Do to the hickory willow
            He learned the golden rule.

He tramped or hill and hollow
           And through the forest glade.
He loved all life and people
            His debts he always paid.

He killed his mothers lovely colt,
And a cherry tree he chopped.
He said he could not tell a lie.
            No matter what the cost.

            When the bugle called him
He was willing then to leave,
To fight hard for his country.
             To suffer, die or bleed.

            He crossed a flowing river
             The British for to fight.
To help his country freedom gain
           Which was their naturel right.

             So unto the White House
           This stately man would stride.
            The Father of our Country
Our hearts need swell with pride.

Yo dear Billie,

This is a very fitting poem for the day, and so very well done.  The rhymes are excellent.

I like this loads.

Wonderful poem,  perfect timing and hopefuly we can all remember how our country fought for it's freedom of opressors.   We all could learn more about the history of the United States.

Love always,
Tracey

What a wonderful poem! He sacrificed to serve his country... now our politicians seek power and personal gain. *sigh*

I was quite impressed that this was written by a 16 year old girl!  There is no argument that George Washington was a great president.  This was a treat to read.

Billie dear, this was glorious, considered also that you wrote it at age 16! I bet you were the literature teacher's pride!

Love,
Margherita

It's not hard to see where Tracey gets his writing abiliy from for you have written a very meaningful poem dear Billie. You have a great story telling style.

It's a shame the willow switch is not applied a little more often to some who would benefit from it these days.
