what came out of the fifties
my formative years
was boredom, a la Eisenhower
outstanding military genius
saw much
maybe saw too much
turned the images of war
into a driving iron
and a putter on the golf course
had a clowns smile
hiding what he'd had to see
the country trying to mend
trying to forget
never forget
the horror of war
we became paranoid to say the least
cold war threatened us
almost as fearful as
that real one
children hiding under their desks
acting out danger
scaring many
then it just became a joke
like I said
boredom, a la Eisenhower

to combat this
a few rebels got together
in
NEW YORK CITY
and began to write poetry
beat poetry
the beatniks
Kerouac, Ginsberg. et al
writing bad poetry
writing good poetry
writing angry poetry
writing subversive poetry
in coffee houses
with a touch of cool
cigarettes dangling from their lips
reciting their bad, good, angry, subversive
words
to a clientele who showed their appreciation
by snapping their fingers
did I mention they were cool
yes indeed, cool was the word
heroin was their Jesus-on-the-cross
uh huh
pulled them apart
began to “see” their words as “God-sent”
beginning of the end
Burroughs ate his Naked Lunch
and it killed him
in the end these beats
became an entity unto themselves

anger
controlled them, one and all
anger is good
not knocking anger
I’ve been angry most of my life
but if you give in to it
angerwillkillyou
if not that
it will make you ineffectual
which is the same thing

I appreciate the compliment, Amaryllis. To even be thought of in reference to Ginsberg is very nice indeed.

JerryPat, You captured the era well. We had some great times after all the bad history, but now I find myself getting angry again over the same type of things. With more access to what is really going on, it hurts even more.  Thanks for  joining Pip.
You have a lot to offer.

Thank you, latearrival. While it is true the more we know (and we know a LOT more these days), the angrier we become. What causes me some problems with that is the fact there there can be no political discourse anymore. Both sides are at fault for this. We resort to name-calling and have begun to spew hate instead of discourse for the common good. Who knows, maybe the coming election will help straighten things out, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hi JerryPat...welcome to Pip.  A good friend recommended that I read you.  The 50's are locked in my memory bank too, even though I think I was protected from anger by Lassy and a positive attitude that came from somewhere I've yet to identify. I enjoyed your poem and will be back to read more.

Thank you very much for checking my poetry out, Martie, and thank your good friend also for me. I took up the slack on the anger for you I’m sure. But that was then and now is now. I’m still angry about certain things, but it is more channeled now. Thanks again for being here.
