Dust devils in a constant swirl,
...dance across a Kansas plain,
Stalks of wheat having given up,
...crowns of golden grain,
High above hot summer sun,
...beats down on fields below,
While lone farmer with his plow,
...drives his tractor to and fro.
A red-tailed hawk soars on the wind,
...silent sentry in blue sky,
While in the distance, West Emma Creek,
...sits lifeless, nearly dry.
Tomorrow is July the 4th,
...in town the big parade,
Antique cars, a marching band,
...fireworks; pink lemonade,
The farmer will be in his field,
...he'll take no holiday,
Plowing stubble, hay to bale,
...ain't got no time to play,
On tractor's cab will fly a flag,
...Old Glory, red, white and blue,
In Kansas fields; Independence Day,
...'cause that's what farmers do.

Absolutely perfect, Tim! Being a little ways down the in Missouri growing up, I can relate to every image you have created here....and the picture of the farmer plowing (no, they don't take holidays off) with the flag flying on his tractor says so very much about the heartland and the people who live there.

Very well done!!!!!

Couldn't agree more, the picture you painted in words is so vivid of the people that make the country what it is.  Well done indeed.

Tim...makes me glad you're not
a farmer, but can write for one...
and makes me even happier to know
you're my neighbor.

Oh yes out here in central Cali, 100 miles wide, 400 miles long, thats all their is but farming, or every kind. People think of California as big city, which it has many of, I grew up in the bay area, but moved out here over ten years ago, and don't have any want to move back. I love small town USA, and its right here, on the left coast.

Great stuff here friend!

Happy Fourth of July!
