Perhaps his most lasting action was a minor item: saying in his papal letter Vox in Rama of 1232 that cats were an instrument of the devil and a symbol of heresy. This led to a great reduction in the number of cats, which, a hundred years later, contributed to the quick spread of the Black Death plague, which killed 1/3 to 1/2 of the population of Europe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Gregory_IX

Eight hundred twenty years ago
A little fact few people know
Caused history to change it's flow.
I swear it's so. I swear it's so.

Pope Gregory to all decreed
That cats were spawned from devil's seed
To kill them was a vital need
And with godspeed..and with godspeed.

Then, all throughout the countryside
A host of countries, far and wide
Conducted feline genocide.
The creatures died. The creatures died.

By thousands they were slaughtered by
Fanatics heeding Papal cry.
Light the bonfires! Watch them die
For God on high. For God on high.

Then came the dreaded plague to fall
On young and old. It killed them all.
The strong, the weak, the big the small,
See how they fall. See how they fall.

For many years, from dawn to dawn
Infected rodents traveled on
With nothing there to stop their spawn
The cats were gone. The cats were gone.

YIkes! Save the cats, kill the mice!
THis is so timely because my son was just forced to move out of a barn converted to apartmenmts due to the number of mice.
WHat a horrid thought, even though beautifully written
THAnk you meter man for your poetry

I don't want to say "Serves them right." Obviously, the plague was a time of tragedy .. but all the cats!  Say it ain't so.  I love this poem, Michael, and you make me want to dig on with the poetry.

Thank you, teacher of mine.

Marvelous, Balladeer!  I have goosebumps!  I love the meter in this...so fits the message of the poem as it reads like an incantation.  I see how a Monotetra should fall against the ears.

There is something especially ghastly and unnerving about slain cats, all that sleek beauty and grace wasted.  Weren't they once considered sacred?  ~Karen

Karen--in Egypt, I believe cats were revered, there is a Cat-god, called "Bast". If my memory serves me sufficiently today. (I used to think everyone online was brilliant, then Ron taught me about "google".

Enjoyed the history lesson regarding my beloved kitty cats, Mike.

Pope Gregory...misogynist. Sour grapes maybe?

Besides the pack of Katrina cats we feed, we have a new one here. I call him "Pywackett" but the rest of the family calls him "Mr. Piddles". Watch that old movie, Bell, Book, and Candle. It's a nice stroll down memory lane, and Kim Novak was exceedingly hot at the time. (Jack Lemmon did a stand out performance playing her brother, too.)

Too much coffee. I'm prattling. But thanks for the read.

They killed them all only to realize that they needed them. The poem was great, nice meter and those poor kitty cat's. -Juanita

The depths people can stoop to appease superstition is appalling. ...Karma? I think so. Excellent write!

Serenity, I did think of 'google', too, but was supposed to be doing something else.  *grin*  You know, "Never do today what you can put of until tomorrow."  And I'd better get with it now, too.  I'd much rather stay and play.   ~ Karen

Too late, Mysteria. *S* And I must confess... I had to choke back the thought "serves them right" even though no one deserved the Plague. I don't understand cruelty... and understand it even less when it's initiated by a deranged mind and followed without question... can anyone say Holocaust?

Superb write, Bal... the subject isn't pretty but the form is fantastic and the rhyme sublime. *S* I'm so glad this didn't involve Long John... though I do wish that ole kitty-kicker would pop back up. *S*

Am I tongue in cheek if I say...

don't fool with Mother Nature...? OR all of God's creatures.

We were all put here for a reason...

Enjoyed the history, Mike. But then that's always been a favorite of mine. History, that is.

Wasn't it such a pity
They slaughtered every single kitty
Killed all felines, large and small
Now all mounted on LongJohn's wall

Not all was lost, within one year
Came pest controller Balladeer
He did his job in every house
Not a varmint was stirring, no single mouse.

sooooooooo as a result of the cat killing, a "peeved pauper" (from obamanombics) who was gifted in fluting and flatulence lead the rodents to the isle of pelosi where she greeted them quite wide eyed as her newest supporters...

I actually knew about this piece of history. Just another example of how we humans like to mess with the delicate balance of life on this planet. You have to appreciate the irony of this event, given that the Pope is suppose to be infallible. And yet, his decision helps perpetuate the greatest natural disaster to befall mankind.

All the same, this was a great read. I bow to you and yours Sir Balladeer. May the cats always cross you path... just not while you're driving the truck with LJA.

This stanza is very tight, hardly any error.
However, the first lines of a poem should lure and captivate the reader but these lines are stiff no energy.  I refuse to go past these lines.  There is no flow to make the reader continue on.

I, however, have enjoyed going past the first lines   I refuse to listen to critics who don't appreciate good poetry
You, my 'Deer are the master of meter, energy and flow!! This is extremely well-expressed and perfect - no errors at all!
I love how in the last line of every stanza you repeat the sentence "I swear it's so" etc..."the cats were gone" - very effective and clever!
As much as I love history, I can honestly say that I didn't know this tidbit of history...so thank you for sharing this with us! I've just learned something new!

Hello Mike, I second all those great comments, for you certainly are the master

of rhyme and rhythm. I'm just so pleased that they didn't wipe out all the cats

otherwise we wouldn't have our beautiful
Oriental Simba, who is like a child to Norma and me. All the best my friend.
