Some bring me fruit and flowers.
Every day's an anecdote.
A cautious tassel on our drapes
reveals the sunlight welcoming.

I strong-arm the door for them -
a growling Annie's by my side.
Ever-eager Freddy is
consigned to terrier, again.
"My Hero --Alpha Dog!!" I lie.
"I am, " he whines.
I laugh. He sighs.
"Of course you are."

pat-pat-him-sweet

He wags the rug in smug placation.

Friends are different these days -
orbs are present in their eyes.
A haunting to be sure, I know,
I look at them and say goodbye.
Silently acknowledging
I can't correct what has transpired.
So I wish them well as they
walk their narrow, spindle-gait

There be dragons that prevail

I lock the door - security,
and I decide to sweep the floor.
Superstitiously--bad luck--

Take that with you, Mutha-wruck!

I will pray this day away.

Love is in the flickering
tealights and my potpourri
bubbles in the caldron we
keep hidden by the ficus tree
that twinkles with blue lights.

Nothing's on the stove tonight.
The cat is dying quietly.
"Layla" makes the pain alright
and Clapton is great company
singing sad sobriety
of one too many apertif.

Grief sings out the sixteenth note
and I am silenced by the weight
of memories I'd thought remote:

extra ordinary days...

* * *

I had much help re-working this repost, from friends in the now-defunct Critical Analysis Forum. I extend my gratitude to them all once again.

Thank you both so much.

Ordinary days are my favorite.

If you take an ordinary day and celebrate it--it becomes a holy day.

This one is dear to my heart, so I appreciate the appreciation. It's just me and Freddy now, so I'm gonna go hug my mutt.

He is finally, truly Alpha Dog. Thanks again, and thanks to doreen, who made me remember this'n.

Karen, this was beautiful to the core although the part about your kitty dying is wrenching chunks out of my heart. I understand that this is about a while back, but still . . . And, of course, I ache for the Annie part but know she is happy upstairs with Flicka, Tigger and Daisy and all your previous animals.  And of course I particularly love the Freddy part, especially as I have a photo of the beautiful gorgeous guy.

I, too, love ordinary days the best, and what is more, I love loving ordinary days - not that I have many of them, more's the pity (like today - had copper thieves stealing 2 of my water pipes and came home to water bursting out of them - apparently they had been doing so for 4 hours - so lots of water lost and water bill will be high next month, and pipes to replace will be expensive, bearing in mind that 2c to me is expensive - no water tonight as it was too late for the plumber to do even a temporary job, but will fix it tomorrow - I am rambling).

And I LOVE what you did with the title!

Well done Karen!

Images are really vivid and the mood is clearly expressed.
Love the Layla part, but of course I always would....smile...

Love the apertif part too because it all fits together so well.

Take Care

I might have missed the first rounding
but I love that you had placed it in
Analysis, and I wish that were back, because
it taught me a lot!

This...is my favorite part,

but then, I have always believed in magic:

quote:

Love is in the flickering
tealights and my potpourri
bubbles in the caldron we
keep hidden by the ficus tree
that twinkles with blue lights.

It sings!

I've drank my wine before bedtime, taking my cold medicine which has knocked me for a friggin' loop. I said all that to apologize for making this short. A kickass piece of work, Serenity.

Karen

I want to say something profound, but I am still to caught up in the magic of this poem.  If I hadn't already liked you, I would for sure now.  Damn girl, this is brilliantly wonderful.
