When the failing afternoon
brushes the edge of meadow,
sweeping shadows like ash
with corn-husk fingers,
it`s then he peels the hardened work gloves
from cramping fingers, and walks
the fence-line home.

He does not hurry. The night
approaches like an idea
whose time has come; bit by bit
it overwhelms the valley,
sets the swallows winging
for the barn, the owl`s silent hunt
to swirl the cooling hours.

Ahead, the lamplight glows
with each step brighter, the familiar
beans and coffee beacon
seems to set it`s scented warmth
like a caring palm upon his cheek,
massaging soft the kinks
and knots of day.

But there is always time
to  tilt the neck, and contemplate
the scintillating velvet,
close stinging lids and listen -
in the heartland`s theatre,
the sound of miles, cold, content-
he listens.

Beautiful images Amaryllis.
I've been an outdoors man all my life and tramped the Canadian forests.
This write of yours perfectly captures the end of day and the satisfying calm that the day's labour and the majesty of nature can bring.
I simply loved this!

Thank you so much, Eric! I`m so glad to read your comment; I`d feared this was maybe `boring`  =(  Heh!  So, much appreciated, my friend.

Far from boring, magically serene would be a better description.

Amaryllis, I think you have a problem with understanding what the word "boring" means - and there I always thought you were a wordsmith!  Nothing you EVER write, LEAST OF ALL this exquisite evensong, could EVER be described as "boring"!

I popped in to Pip to send today's messages to Linda (Earth Angel) in Announcements, and was in need of . . . well, I wasn't sure what I was in need of, until I read your poem, then I knew that it was exactly this poem.  Thank you.

Please anyone who sees this and doesn't already know how desperately ill Earth Angel is and how in need of our prayers and healing wishes she is, please go into Announcements and send her a message in the thread I posted about her.  I copy the messages every night (about 9pm South African time)and send them to her daughter Shannon, so that Shannon can read them to Linda to help warm her heart and bring healing to her body and even her spirit, as amazing as it is, needs soul food.

I know you won't mind me typing this in my response to your poem, Amaryllis.  You are far too nice to mind.  I have emailed everyone whose email address I have and told them about Linda and the post in Announcements, but I know there are many more people in Pip who love Linda and who don't normally go into Announcements and would like to know and help her heal.

Please spread the word.  I know we would all like Linda to know just how loved she is.

Thank you, Garan! That`s so nice of you to say..

DS: ha, yes, but it might be a cold night out, should he decide to-!

Margherita, thanks so much always for your support of my writing..it means a lot to me.

Owl, thanks for the nice comments for the poem, and yes! You are right- I don`t `mind` a bit your adding the message concerning Linda (EarthAngel)..! In fact I am so glad you did, as I had somehow missed it...I haven`t popped over to Announcements for so long.  I have written a message to that sweet lady, and am hoping/praying much for her comfort and recovery. I think mentioning it in a poem reply post is a great idea, as there may be others like myself, who have not heard yet, but are glad to. Thank you, Owl, for your big ol` heart...you are a special gal, yourself!

My best to all~

you have it, A,
the ability to put sights sounds smells
into prose.

this is beautifully written and expresses the contentment that I see all around me in this and the surrounding towns.

If only others could feel this~~

I'll echo what everyone has said before.
Beautifully done.

What a beautiful, insightful poem you have constructed, Amaryllis.

It brings to mind my grandfather who worked from sunup to sundown all the years I knew him. Had a bell atop a long pole and my grandmother would go out in the yard and ring it to let him know it was mid-day and time to eat.

~ My grandmother is over eighty and still doesn't need glasses. Drinks right out of the bottle. ~

This was a worthy topic bump. About all this work is missing is the farewell feel of savoring and releasing a few breaths before turning to go indoors.

It is a much appreciated read, Amaryllis.

Sharon, you're back with all your poetic magic! I've been looking for you. This poem is a real marvel. Beautiful rural scene with magnificent images ("night approaches like an idea") You really should publish some of these. They're much better than a lot of published stuff I read.
