Cold and Slow

I have been told I have a gift,
But shackled to this prism of grief;
Even if I shine in darkness,
I assure you there's no relief.
Where, on the road, the slightest rift
Severs your path to paradise;
And in the bowels of emptiness,
Even indifference has its price.

It's a slow death that overtakes
The will, when the mind stops to think -
The cup of madness tastes divine,
So pour yourself another drink!
For it's but love logic forsakes,
When you hear that midnight bell toll.
Just lick the stamp, then taste your wine,
And send the postcard to your soul.

I've wandered this valley of ghosts,
(Things foul and forgotten long since);
To stand before this shadowed wall -
My misbegotten inheritance.
And of all things I loved the most,
It's but this face that crushes me.
Still, every night I hear that call -
Return to face cold destiny.

You cannot know how poised the dart -
How fine the art thatdissects you,
Atropos, blade at the ready;
While Lachesis proportions due.
The chill of shadow overtaking heart,
While you but dangle on the thread...
The bladed hand rising, slow and steady -
She laughs cause you don't know you're dead.

Whispers on the wind tingle nearby,
Palpable sensations touch my lips.
The presence of evil comes to mind,
With the soft hush of fingertips.
And the thick gloom swallows my cry,
As I wheeze and cough, catching breath.
Then turn to scream, but wake to find
Another dream greeting its cold, slow death.

I strike! It quivers in that heart
Which drives me to this end;
I draw and kiss the bloody dart,
My last-my only friend!

Michael ~ Poet Man ... I come to read each one of your poems and know that they will come through for me.  I'll feel emotion and savor each rhyme and word.  Thank you for delivering.

Dear Michael, you explore darkness and dare to convey your emotions as only the most sensitive souls can.

Now imagine the beauty that you can convey when your sensitivity and poetic mastery are at the service of Light! I know, I have seen it.

Slow death is our common destiny, so, while on the Path, we might well try to LIVE slowly and savor to the fullest the heavenly gifts we have been bestowed with.

Thank you for your thought provoking words.

Margherita

The urge to follow the ghosts of the damned is a tempting resolve, Michael. I chased, walked, holding hands with the grimy ghosts of mine for too many years (decades). These days the sun shines and the evilest ghost abhors sunlight. They are still there, of course, my evil ghosts, waiting patiently for the slightest wavering of my soul.

I'm of the mind that the mind shouldn't be allowed to think over much, because it has a tendency to dredge up ghosts where there are none.  We are our own worst enemies.  Good write, hon.

"But turn and scream, just to wake and find
Another dream greeting a cold, slow death."

Nice dream?  I've had a few too.  One time I was fighting el diablo himself.  When I woke-up I was sweating like crazy.  Had the flu, the fever broke, and I awoke...
Funny in a way, the places the mind can take you...

Enjoyed your write, Michael.

The title is appropriate... for I felt a slow and steady chill crawl up my spine as I read... appreciating each line even as I ached for the author. *S* Too many dreams lie rotting in a trash bin, nothing more than momentary amusements for the uncaring fates... Klotho needs to spin a better thread and/or slap those others around a bit, don't you think? *S* As painful as this is, it's also poetic perfection!!

Alison, thank you for the wonderful comment.  As poets, all we can do is strive to move our readers.  It's nice to know I have succeeded with you.

Margherita, your words are equally thought provoking.  Indeed, we should savor every precious moment of life we have, while we have it.  Thank you.

JP, may the knowledge that they are there steer and guide you to prosperity.

Nicole, there will always be ghosts... To deny that denies you the power to overcome them.  We are our own worst enemies, that's true, but sometimes passivity can prove much crueler than any harm we could imaging doing ourselves otherwise.  I choose to overcome... Or die trying, (cold and slowly).

JL, i know all to well about "fever dreams" from my 2 yr bout with Valley Fever.  The unconscious mind is a powerful, powerful thing.  Downright scarey at times.

Ruth, yeah... I'm not sure I'd wanna mess with Klotho... She's already the disgruntled overworked one in her bunch.  She's probably got passive aggressive tendencies too.  She'd likely swap out might thread for a lower quality off-brand one when I wasn't paying attention... Something that snaps a little too easily, and unexpectedly, of course.  Nope, I do believe ol' Klotho is doing a splendid job!  Just splendid.
