the past
strange how the past
makes its presence known
suddenly
without warning
I see a face
Nanette tonight
I'm sitting in front of my desk
Zoe lying on the sofa staring my way
I'm trying to make sense of my novel
she's trying to make sense of me
I’m covering up things
trying not to think certain things
hiding them
pushing them in the back of my thoughts
she has no such dilemma
Zoe is not a hider of secrets
as am I
at times such as these
my past thrusts itself forward
my past
much more past than future
I think of good times swimming at Jones Beach
almost swept out to sea by its current
Jones Beach
brings into focus
Nanette
oh, how would I like to . . .
no use going there
she is in Heaven
if there is a Heaven
Nanette is there
I ache with her memory
I cringe about other things

the past
not all so sad
for a rebel, I managed happiness
for short periods of time
but when I was happy
it was intense happiness
could have done better
sure
couldn't we all

the past
strange how the past
makes its presence known
suddenly
without warning
I see a face
sometimes it is Marionette
sometimes it is Dottie
sometimes it is . . .
the past
I don't let it consume me
still . . .
the past is here to stay

I can feel your pain in remberance of past things good and bad. But, without our past we can not be our present self.

Absolutely, Kat. I wasn't crying. I have been there. Done that. Just remembering. I agree with you, our past is us. Thank you for stopping by and reading my offering.

Appreciate the read and comment, Faith. Yep, we all have something in common, the past. Even the young has a past. In that was they are kinship with us over the hill bunch.(Smile when you say that, pardner.)

Yep, the past 'IS' here to stay.
However, it would be a life full of senility without it....smile...

Love how you captured your reflections in this Jerry. Some painful, some happy but always there to remind you who you are....Happens to all of us and you got the point across well.

I guess, Eric, that some of us spend more time than others about their past because we made more mistakes than others. There is a line we must not cross when we think of our passes, and that line is pity. I have overcome that emotion and am better for it. Thank you kindly for being here.

I love your work too Jerry.  You are pretty gutsy when it comes to holding up your painful past for us to see...and without pity.  Your wisdom is showing

Good morning Lori. thank you very much for your kind words. I'm not all that positive about the wisdom, but at least the past doesn't bring me as much pain as it used to. I have finally, after all this time, come to grips with it. I think me "airing the dirty laundry" has help me do that.

I love this poem, especially the 3rd last line which affirms not crossing the line of self-pity.  You have not only been airing your dirty laundry, but washing it too before airing it, and it is now starting to smell of sunshine and fresh, fresh air.

Self pity is destructive and I have never really gone there, Owl, except maybe once, maybe twice, but it never lasted long. I loathe that emotion probably more than any humans can have. Yep, airing the dirty laundry after I wash it, a very good way of putting it. Thank you.

this reminds me of what a wise man once told me, "senility is simply losing one’s ways along the pathway of the past" ...enjoyed your words...they make for a very thoughtful write
