my heart is a muscle;
it is a churning, pulling pushing thing
it is not a paper cut-out,
lace-trimmed and folded in half.
there are no jasmine-lined trellises
leading a path, ever upward;
it does not dream.

in the blue and the red,
the sky does not doze, nor do
clouds wear rose-colored petticoats;
it does not abide the life trapped inside,
or the hopeful foreshadow
of a confession, tucked away safely.

it does not want love without consequence,
nor does it fear its passing;
there is no belly full of longing
no pockets full of wishes.
it is not nearsighted, it does not see
distance in miles, or horizons
it does not ache in a heartache kind of way.

it moves on in its dull hammering,
a soak of apathy in the chaos
that surrounds it.

The heart continues to beat,
When fickle loves goes astray,
No wailing; gnashing of teeth,
It knows not, and cares not.

Sorry, Nicole I couldn't resist. The heart everyone talks about (me too) is fiction. I can't love you with all my heart, but I can love you with all my mind. The mind reacts to a situation that we call love, and in its reaction causes our blood pressure to also react, therefore we feel our hearts pulsating and that is where the "love you with all my heart" comes from.

I'll hush . . .

No apologies; I enjoy the poetic reply.     And that is so so true, that is what I was going for with this... the heart is just a muscle.  It's all of the things around it that conjure life, even if it is blissfully unaware.  Thank you for seeing that, Jerry.

You are WRONG, dear Nicole!

The sayings "to see with the heart, to feel with the heart, to decide with the heart" are now scientifically confirmed.

There are neurons in the heart in great number and they allow "communication brain-heart" and to "act" from the heart.

I have recently seen a scientific tv transmission where this was discussed.

I have made a little research on google ... here is a link, but there are many many more!
http://sue-adams.hubpages.com/hub/your-second-brain-is-in-your-heart

Of course this doesn't mean your poem lacks excellence, all the excellence of your heart, as it wanted to be more than just a muscle!

All my appreciation of your poetic skills!

Margherita

ps oh and yes there is a belly full of longing! Also in our belly there are neurons and so what we feel "in the guts" is of extreme importance!

Ahhh, I sigh with my heart.
The heart is just a muscle, a mechanical pump to supply blood to the furthest extremities of the human body.  In fact the hardest working muscle of the body.  However, to speak of a gentle heart, a warm heart, a kind heart, a brave heart, is speaking of a spirit within the human existence, without that spirit we would be in a comma state of living.
No smiling, no good deeds, no hello how are you…

Is it hard to explain?  Is it an indeterminate state of life?
I think so.  With that spirit (heart) we live, without it we are sticks in the mud…

I enjoyed your write.

JL

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul,and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself.

There is some new research out that suggests that the heart is more than just a muscle. Margherita posted it on facebook. I have read some very interesting stories about people who have changed completely after having a heart transplant so I was not too surprised by this new information. Perhaps you could google it. I do love the poem as always. You definately have the heart of a poet.

I guess the hollowness and hurts and aches in the vicinity of my chest cavity could be attributed to gas. LOL But I'll continue to blame my heart... or the pieces of it. *S* Great write!

Enjoyed your poem immensely, Nicole and the ensuing discussion.  I haven't read Margherita's link, but will do so with great interest.  Did you convince your heart, or did it refuse to believe you?  Smiles.

When I read this I can't help but visualize some poor toothless Oildale redneck swearing by the almighty that man has never stepped foot on the moon... Only this time I'm the one in the cynic's role.  That the heart is a muscle is pure fact... That it is nothing more than that I will go to my grave, swearing by the almighty against.  I have felt that "void" in my chest... And it wasn't a palpatation... It was an empty, aching chasm were once something lived, love, and lived no more.

Love cannot live in the brain. How could it?   Simply put, there is no logic to it,  and the brain classifies everything by locical values .  The heart houses love, and by its own irrational standards wars with the brain.  The voice of reason comes a very weak and pitiful cry against love in full fruition.

Anyhow... Just felt like ranting a bit on a subject, by any proven measure, I obviously know nothing about.  I took the liberty of posting a reply to your "Alcatraz" poem called the "Prisoner" wherein I give a lil more of my misguided beliefs.

Great poem, btw.

Michael

Diana, I may be able to convince her yet...especially surrounded by such loving people.

Ms E, Thank you hon, very much!

Michael, Did you just call me a poor toothless Oildale redneck?  LOL  I know...I know... what can I say, I wear my logic on my sleeve.  (hugs)

Indescribable

"my heart is a muscle;
it is a churning pulling pushing thing"

and it does dream, it does love,
it does dwell in a metaphysical place
of sorrow and joy, pain and ecstasy,
wonder and bewilderment.

"my heart is a muscle;"
it swirls me in ways I never dreamed,
pushes and pulls me every way imaginable.

"my heart is a muscle;
it is a churning pulling pushing thing."
And it will live with me
far beyond where all else is dust.

"my heart is a muscle;
it is so . . . indescribable.
~~~
Much enjoyed your write, my friend, just had to use your words "my heart is a muscle; it is a churning pulling pushing thing"...
j.
By the way, the eggnog was good, but I'm still searching for that long lost flavor I remember.
Thanks for the recipe.
J, I'm so happy you did - what a beautiful reply.   You know, it's funny that you say that about the taste; I used to ask my Gma what made hers taste so good (like everything else) and she used to say that she stuck her finger in it, cause it made it sweeter.  lol  I miss her.
