it's clear to me the light pole wire is full
again
squawking crows
littering the ground beneath them
foul droppings
from Satan’s minions
perched atop the wire
which droops from weight of the imps
committing a blasphemous devilish curse
insolence on parade
communicating to each other
foreign to everyone and everything
other birds cannot understand their gibberish
and steer clear
from the bullies of the backyard
paranoid way of thinking
maybe
maybe not
foul, evil birds
crows
from the sky descended
perched upon that wire
by prearranged petition
oh, a cold wind
blows throughout my soul
their eyes
beady and quite Satanish
measure me as if they were sighting
down a gun barrel
what a dark place I live
with these wretched birds
they’ve been coming
every afternoon
now for three weeks
waiting
watching
what little soul I have left
for them to pick apart
somewhere in the distance
the lonesome scream of a southbound freight train
wish I could catch it
scrunch up in the corner of boxcar
away from the crows
it has been some time in coming
this great fear
fear so immense
I feel like my skull will soon split open
arteries will crack and come apart
blood pour through my nose
with the doo-ron-ron background music
of the fifties
filters through my brain
colored girls singing
can’t remember their name
the music
only thing that soothes my heartbeat
upsets the crows too
that’s why I put it on
keeps them at bay, or it seems to
but
I don’t know
for how long

Aww, thanks for the hug, Lori. Actually I like crows and ravens, but they are such good subjects writing about evil I cannot resist. Thanks for the read and comments.

Your free verse is always a pleasure to read, Jerry, and you imagination is as fertile as a Kansas cornfield...well done.

sir, my hat's off to you...amazing and yes, haunting write...especially loved this phrase among so many notable ones:

"insolence on parade" ...I need to go back and re-read it, but first I must breathe again...

You're too funny, steavenr, and I like that in a comment. Appreciate your indulgence of the poem and your humorous words about it.

Also gave me the chills but poor crows to be dubbed "evil" by us mere mortals.

A good poetic verse writer can crow about anything he/she wants.
Love all clever construction of the dark thoughts in this one Jerry.

Hi Eric. I don't know, there is something about crows that puts me in that dark place. I'm blaming it on Edgar Allen, that's what I'm doing.

Remember Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds'? I think that was the title wasn't it?
That movie scared the heck out of me.
I don't know how they ever trained all those birds to do what they did.

Crows/Ravens are ugly black birds but they're part of nature's clean-up crew and we need them to recycle.
Quite amazing really. Very very smart birds!

Yep, that was the name of that movie, Eric. Scared me also. Come to think of it, maybe that movie was what got me to thinking about crows as evil. Hah! Then later as I read Poe and his strange Raven and the friggin' Nevermore that just cemented my thoughts about the birds. I DO know they are bullies in the bird echelon, it is a perfect illustration of might makes right.
