Still I see the old Hardwick house
as it was not so long ago,
standing like a dowager empress
overlooking the highway below.

In aging Victorian splendor,
she dominates with grace
the forest that closes around her
in a passionate, green embrace.

Seen through the curtains of rain
that the winters of Salem bring
or nestled amid the flowering trees
of a picturesque Oregon spring.

If I close my eyes, I smell lilacs
and hear the buzzing of bees
busy among the pink and white blossoms
in the orchard of apple trees.

I remember the old wooden porch
with tangled white roses entwined,
and the door that will always be open...
some where in my mind.

Oh, this is just magnificent, just as The Hardwick House is magnificent in my thoughts as I read your very revealing poem. Wonderful!

Magnificent is the right word, dear Ida!

Simply perfect.

quote:
If I close my eyes, I smell lilacs
and hear the buzzing of bees
busy among the pink and white blossoms
in the orchard of apple trees.

This is true and strongly echoing also from the depth of my own childhood. Superb!

Ida, I LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOVE this!  When the image fades in my mind, I will come back to this to rekindle it.  I have made a mental note of the word "Hardwick" for when I need to do a search for it, and, of course, it will also be saved in my Pip - Marchmadness folder.
