Silverware

I searched and searched
many places many days
through drawers and boxes
to find what was needed

the right long knife
tempered and hard
to carve out a life

the right tined fork
for more than just eating
to consume all my work

each expected to be just so . . .
the proper fingered fit
suitable in the hand
as if meant to be mine

but the simple spoon
the one that should be filled nightly
to nourish the rest of me

is yet unfound in its perfection
illudes my grasp
haunts my life's search
leaves me awake and hungry

Very beautiful and masterfully carved, Krawdad.  That last stanza consumes me, but is the consequence not what births your work and creates something you give yourself and others, and is not giving the most noble and rewarding and uplifting form of receiving?

You've tinged life with sweet regret,
adding a touch of lemon to the tea we sip.

Well done, Kraw.

It's neat how you used such familiar items to cleverly express yourself.   Have you ever noticed how often one is served less than three pieces of silverware?    When I grew up we always set the table with the knife, fork, and spoon.   Now, we may just get the fork!  Very telling...

I enjoyed your writing very much.
