The cruel streets I walked made me sad
I looked not at him, nor at her
Those who passed me by, gutter grads
I felt at home among the curs
We were outcasts from hearth and home
Over the land our kind did roam.

Looking here and then searching there
As many as stars in the sky
By foot, by car, sometimes by air
We wanted to understand why
We couldn't go back where we'd been
Burned our bridges and that's a sin.

Some were poets within their hearts
There were murderers in the crowd
And some were like me; a la carte
Doing what it took to be proud
Some chased women, some ran from them
And in the mêlée some lost a gem.

I sit here writing words of mine
Wondering how many are left
Who write words and sell for a dime
I have escaped death's cold, cold theft
I have fought the fight and I've won
I'm old yes, but I've just begun

And you have done an excellent job.
With age our spirit is defined, and your spirit definitely shines in these words.

Appreciate the kindness shown to my street poem, JL, thank you so much.

Lori, you are the inspiration, I am but the hanger on. Thank you for saying so though.

I like the positive aspect of this,
Jerry...and I truly believe that you
will write, and share,
as long as your ink bleeds.

Sunshine, many thanks for your kind words. Yes, you are correct. I have a saying. I live to write, and I write to live. That's me. That's always been me, even in those days when I wasn't writing, I was thinking about writing.

Perfect conclusive thought to a very intense heart touching write, dear Jerry.

An existence on the streets is tough and hard and yet what a school it is if one is ready to learn!

Great work.

Love,
Margherita

"An existence on the streets is tough and hard and yet what a school it is if one is ready to learn!"

You got that right, Margherita, but it took me a long time to learn. My demons were relentless.

Thank you for your continued support and blessings, many of which I doubt I deserve.

I should quote the entire poem, I love it all, but the ending...oh...the ending...it makes one want to try..it is inspirational!

The "cruel" streets are real, Jerry, and I have written about them..but in reality, my poems about them are from observations. Only someone that has experienced them can write like this about them..
Good work here, especially the last lines.

Yes, Ice, the cruel streets are real, much to real at times, but most of those down there are there voluntary, not all, but most. It took me a while, a long while to work my way out of them

Thank you for being here.

There were a few of us doing what we could when we could, giving up part of ourselves and taking from the giving, if that makes any sense. That picture I have up there has nothing to do with me, I just needed something to highlight the poem.

Thanks for being in my space, kingsangel.
