Lumpy oatmeal makes me crazy!

still-life day in august

wispy tendrils of fog
lazily swirl over the silted river
morning sun glows
casting gold on yellow leaves
silence shatters, broken, by birds
trilling their morning songs
happy to greet another day

misty morning slow to wake
entices me to come out
coffee in hand, and savor, delight
in the gift of a monday day

downy white clouds balloon
on the horizon, popcornesque
framing forming geese practicing
flight 101 in preparation
to move on, away, 'til spring
leaving only the echo of mournful songs
captured within those pillowed clouds

blue skies of noon, blinding
garishly bright, overkill color
taunts me to relish this day
before it, once again, is painted gray

cranberries, permeate the air,
acrid aroma wafting in wind currents
ruby leaves brilliant, nesting, nestling
deep red, delicate, translucent, bitter
berries, always under-rated, last
to be picked, never bragged over
but still jewels shining in the tilted sun
pictures waiting to be taken

evening light casts its glow
under green leaves, touching on red
as it creates cranberry glass
in its most natural form

the day has come to its end
trees etched skeletons against
a muted blue night sky
the birds silent, sated
by chokecherry berries while
cranberries wait
to color red winter white

Such harmony and beauty in every line you offer us, dear Alison!

I have so much enjoyed moving through the day with you ... in the end the impressions of your observations gather in the heart and the world becomes a friendly, loving, peaceful, marvellous place.

Thank you for sharing your wonderment.

Love,
Margherita

Fantastic wordplay herein, Alison. "Popcornesque." I had to stop here and say the word over a few times, as images of small, fluffy white clouds scudded by in my thoughts. Love this poem. I'm keeping it.

You painted a landscape in which I could see every brushstroke...and it is all beautiful. If that's the way it is there, I want to come visit!!!!

Alison, I hope you have lots of space.  I am joining Balladeer and Ruth, so expect us all!  I almost forgot to breathe during my first reading of the poem.  As I have said so many times before, I am sure you are Alaska's most effective ambassador!

In its effect this poem reminds me of one you wrote about camping in Alaska.  I think it was Martie and Margherita who were going to join me in arriving on your doorstep.

You took the reader on a journey from dawn to evening-tide, Alison and you did it magnificently.

I get the feeling you're one of those people who like to take an hour to sit outside each day, and just watch how things change with time.

Me too...

Lovely poem. Though it's strange that even though the whole world may change, it is always one, often tiny detail that grabs our attention, and we revisit each day...

Suncleaver,

You are right.  I do watch our world a lot, but sometimes something just catches my eye.  This evening it was a chokecherry tree in the evening sun.  The leaves were all golden and there was one at the end of each bare branch.  Beautiful - and I didn't have my camera.

Thank you for reading.
