.

Sunday afternoon
And the town
Is settling down
Into its routines

The stolid mayor
His higher officers
Are on parade

The fashionable
Or at least newly rich
Walk the cobbled streets of Delft
Grandly dressed in their cloth and silk
To impress God and lesser beings

Maids and servants
Are out and about
The tavern’s closed
There are sundry smells
Lingering in the dusty air

Now I take
An hour or two
Matching awe
With practiced skill

To give your heart
And the world after you
The sacrament of light

Oh, John, this is lovely!  I love Vermeer and other Dutch artists.  You depicted this beautifully.  I don't know that painting - or rather I didn't until I read your poem.  I can see it so clearly with those old gold tones in light and shade.

Vermeer is my favorite painter and I have visited DElft some years ago, such a kind and nice place, so the poem talks to me,  thanks for the brilliant and talented poem,
