ALMOST
23 June 2011

She lifted lightly a strand
of breeze-blown hair
out of her eyes
where she stood
basking in the glory
of the South African winter sun.

Her fingers stroked the rough bark
of one of her beloved acacias,
as she mused ocean-far,
and breathed in the honey
of the little yellow-bloom explosions.

“Yes, it was, it nearly was” she sighed,
her wistful smile
echoing in her infinity-eyes,
and a little amethyst sunbird
in the Aloe arborescens
twittered sunsong happiness
in avian agreement.

She felt his eyes
sunning her back,
his fingers
butterfly-touching
her shoulders,
his smile
soaking
deep
into her heart's core
and painting the sky
winter-washed.
She cat-arched her back
with sensuous pleasure
as his breath
caressed the back
of her neck
and fluttered down her spine,
bubble-soft.
She knew he was there,
just as she knew he wasn’t.

I am reminded of the sirens singing when distant sailors came close to their shore...almost an innocent, yet not so song..enjoyed it lady owl

Thank you for your kind words, Ida.

I love that it reminded you of sirens calling on the seas, Dark, and that you felt the heart and soul of the poem.  Thank you.

Your word truly flow and your poetry is filled with images and aromas.  Your writing is visual.  On so many levels, I find your poetry special, Diana.

The last two lines end this poem wonderfully. It's one of those wherein you say, "I wish I'd written that" but I don't have your poetic voice. But, it speaks to and for me. BRAVO my friend.
