The widower sucked a sob from his throat,
Gritting his teeth trying not to give in,
Dressed all in black except for his blue coat.

Inside his hand he squeezed tightly the note,
He felt a drop of rain upon his skin,
The widower sucked a sob from his throat.

The casket hovered o'er the empty moat,
His mouth quivered thinking of his wife, Gwen,
Dressed all in black except for his blue coat.

Preacher droned on as if casting for votes,
The old man knew the pastor drank sloe gin,
The widower sucked a sob from his throat.

Their only child, Jack, baaa'd like a young goat,
The old man was glad he hadn't been twins,
Dressed all in black except for his blue coat.

The coffin was lowered like a sunk boat,
Note he dropped in said, Jack is not my kin.
The widower sucked a sob from his throat,
Dressed all in black except for his blue coat.

Excellent work, dear Jerry. Those last moments of good bye ceremonies always make people consider some secrets that maybe have lasted for as long as the relationship lasted.

Very profound and though the theme is sad, the poem is very thought provoking and enriching as it stirs our sensitivity.

Love,
Margherita

Margherita, I know it is sad. I write a lot of sad poetry. Life isn't always sun, roses and happy smiling faces. Thank you for you comments.

keenshot, I didn't think I had seen that moniker before. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.

O those secrets from cradle to grave.
Some come to light, some stay within.
This was a good one.

The villanelle is one of my favorites, so you caught my eye.  Your poem was very fitting, considering that I just moments ago completed updating our Remember page to include our most recent PipTalk loss.

Very nicely done, Jerry - I love reading poets who enjoy poetic structure..

Thank you very much, Nan. I am a wanderer among the poetical styles. I started with rhyme, and still love it, then there were certain things I needed to get out there where the free style was the best instrument to do that. But I like and dabble in different styles, and by no means do I feel qualified to call myself a poet, not really, I'm just a guy who likes to write poems. Thank you again for making my day.

P.S.: I'll check out the "Remember" page.
