The mask of a beautiful smile often hides her pain
Her experiences hidden from most, never ending whispers chill her thoughts
Reminders of the cold leave her shivering, naked, ashamed
Scared of, but strong enough to face the next day
Curious where she fits in this life
She tries, timidly, bravely, carelessly, to share
But it’s never warm enough to completely reveal herself
Beautiful outside, she fights a colorless, cold self image
Her past rapes her from the inside out
Invisible icicles temper her lust for life, frozen by the scars on her soul
They suppress the flame of passion inside the girl
Her dreams chilled by the reality of her past
Accomplishments in her mind, never meant to last
Swimming in beauty and opportunity, drowning in life’s reflections
In her eyes you can find a glimmer of calm that vanishes at second glance
But within her soul a lonely flame thaws her from the inside out
Melting day by day, she finds the pretty roles to play
Fire, she does not know, grows inside her
The past, playing itself out, again and again
The frozen mask she hides behind is losing the battle
Slowly, steadily, her truth melts the mask away
Until one day, the mask is not there to hide behind
Her lust for life will be free, not by her minds making
But by the strength of her spirit, too strong to be held down, her fit in life will be found
Spring will reveal her beauty
Never to be hidden by the mask of a harsh winter again.

I really liked this. You captured the essence and whole of a past which will not allow an easy ascent into the world this woman lives in.

I identify somewhat also with this person you write about, because I quite understand the coldness of the past and the inability to forgive oneself.

Of all the lines in this well-written poem, I like this one the best . . . "But it’s never warm enough to completely reveal herself."

Intolerant people are the people who do not believe the way we want them to, which makes us intolerant by default.—July 26, 2010
