Sun-Warmed Sands

Errant seagull feather
flicked free by preening beak,
see-saw floats in downward spiral,
whisks skyward in cloudy billows,
pushed by wind off white-capped sea,
caught by childish hands.
"Look mommy, Daddy see . . .
the seagull gave it to me."

Yesterday -  a month, a year,
sun-warmed sands feel the same
beneath bare feet almost sensing
foot prints long gone;
stopping at water’s edge, they wait,
so lips can blow
lovingly kept seagull feather
off palm of hand.

Which see-saw floats in downward spiral,
whisks skyward in cloudy billows,
pushed by wind off white-capped sea,
up . . .
         up . . .
                   up . . .

Seagull feather,

Love of you and me.

Hi jwesley, this is such a touching poem, it evolves into so much more than one reads into it with the naked eye.

Just beautiful!!! Great to read you here again.

Thoroughly enjoyed this.

There is so much love in this verse, dear Jimmy, that the warmth of the sand expands and touches the heart.

Beautiful write, so glad you are back.

Love,
Margherita

I love this vision of joy.  A feather carries so many gentle connotations, but the bouyancy is always magical.  The innocence and happiness of children so pleased with nature's treasure is a gift to remind us not to loose sight of simple beauty, too.  Their hearts are so pure.

I can see the images and the scenario of a balmy beach day so clearly, the child, the feather.  It's balm to my spirit.  Thank you!

After coming back and reading the comments here (and I sincerely appreciate them all),
I guess I failed with this piece as it obviously didn't convey what I wanted (unless I misread the comments).  Only my wife (and maybe Blues) saw it for what it was - - - the death of a child.

Will have to more closely watch my wording next time, as I want to get the idea across, but don't want to use explicit phrasing like death or died or anything similar.

Again, thanks for the reads -- have to try and spend more time in here ... really miss the family!

Dear Jimmy, reading your comment I feel like saying that you worded this in a wonderful delicate way. It was evident that you spoke of a child, I thought of the memory of tender moments of childhood long past, but not of the death of this child though. This makes it even more touching, heartwrenching actually.

Love,
Margherita

Jimmy, I am not trying to sound wise after the event, but I was going to say (before I read all the replies), that it was very beautiful, but there was a tinge that disturbed me and I was going to ask for reassurance that the child grew up and moved away and hadn't died.  Sadly, I see that I cannot ask for that reassurance.

I am so very sorry for your loss, whether recent or long ago, though I suspect long ago - time, I know doesn't heal.  People just grow stronger in time in coping.  Such a loss is the most terrible of all to bear.  You have honoured your child in a most exquisite and worthy way.  It is a good thing that you are able to write about your child.  It is a way of comforting yourself and bonding with your child in Heaven, who is now Daddy's and Mommy's Guardian Angel.

No, I did not feel that, only the exuberance of a child's way.  It's a lovely write, either way, and moved me in the reading.  Children are so guiless... The memory is so tender.

I did think of your daughter ~ and I still think that your poem shows such a tender and beautiful memory of her.  I was not good in expressing this to you, Jimmy.  I remember from other poems you have shared ~ and I treasure each one of these poems that you share with us.

Fortunately, it WAS NOT my daughter or child . . . actually this stemmed from a combination of things...friends that have lost children/grandchildren and several fairly recent programs on TV about ill and/or dying children.

Thanks to all of you, very much, for your warm concern though.

Jimmy.
