Her head made movements lightening fast
Then went to a dead stop her gaze held still
like a sparrow on a telephone wire
Her hair and makeup were perfectly composed
Her clothes muted blues and grays
with a purple scarf draped around her shoulders
She was surrounded by 7 men around a table
Men with tattoos that said “Death Before Dishonor”,
and “Hell Bound Bikers” and “101st Airborne”
on large, hairy, powerfully, muscled arms
The men laughed loudly and clasped their hands
together in a kind of upside down handshakes
They traded friendly insults and guffawed jests
But they did not curse because of her presence
Then she spoke just as if she were addressing
fellow teachers at an elementary school
Clearly she was a retired first grade teacher
“My name is Diane and I am an alcoholic”
She said it with confidence and without fear
The men were quiet and respectful
surrendering to her silent authority
