That Tender Feeling

this morning my childhood called
out of nowhere it’s voice on the line
where suddenly my past came flooding back
lungs lost breath blood running to your feet
leaving a shiver in rush of that tender feeling
Johnny was my childhood sweetheart
he was the first boy to ever kiss my lips
and he had held me like a silk ribbon
never once compromising my innocence
most certainly he had bent my breath
years of us being the reigning couple
we grew up steps away from each other
living mirrored lives junior high to high
school halls echoed our hand holding
the bus always held its reserved seat
small town girl with an angelic voice
sang everywhere anyone would listen
solos in church and in concert choir
where he was the letter of every sport
making his mark in all with a ball
his jacket had kept me safe and warm
tucked in the thick Mississippi cold
a time or two he had used his fist
the way one does to defend your honor
funny how you pack up your memories
ironing the wrinkled to crisp starched folds
layered in piles of happy and sad
how lucky had I been to have had him
he had been the one to mold my heart
the one I practiced with learning to love
I want to thank you Johnny
for the childhood of you and me

"I'm so hard to handle
I'm selfish and I'm sad."
— Joni Mitchell

You tell your stories so well, we all wish we had been there.
And now we wonder of the next chapter and what happened then.
Do tell.

Lovely reminiscing in this beautiful write.  I often find myself doing the same, a hint of mood, feeling, a well-known scent from way back then, and I become so sentimental. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story with us.

The ink in which you spill from your pen is excellent. I love your stories as well...

This is sweet, Helen. We never stayed in one place long enough for me to have this experience.

It is an unexpected pleasure how we are taken back, in the best way.

You poetry is ever so tender and loving, slick lady.

Wonderful reading~
