standing on a shadow's lace

It Remains

on the top shelf
in the kitchen cupboard
way back, in the back
all the way to the left
hidden safely away
is an old mayonnaise jar
the lid is a little dented
lip has aged in rust
only I know it’s there
my private treasure chest
but many a time someone
has tried to throw it away
to be rescued yet again
they just see an empty
beat up useless container
that in the summer of
my ninth year I came to own
on a hot July Mississippi night
for capturing lightening bugs
by the light of the moon
in the four o’clock beds
sleeping cradled in fingers
vase for dandelion bouquets
frogs with blades of grass
a magic rock a time or two
boy’s names written in red
a whisper of wild wishes
full of hopes and dreams
protecting my tender tears
things go in and come out
it has held pieces of my life
never has it been empty
the ghostly things are plenty
it safely carries my secrets
and it remains, it remains

"I'm so hard to handle
I'm selfish and I'm sad."
— Joni Mitchell

A magical jar indeed and you honored it so beautifully here for the services rendered throughout the years.

Loved this write much. Keep the jar active!

This reminds me of the large seashell I still have from when I was 6 years old. Somebody left it in an old house we rented and I've been carrying it around with me for 59 years now. It has seen a lot of miles. I can still hear the ocean when I put it up to my ear. Are we sentimental or what? I guess that's why I love your poetry so much.

I understand that special treasure. Sometimes, the things we treasure, just don't mean anything to anyone else. But, I understand!

Keepsakes such as this that contain a lifetime of memories... they're what make wood, bricks and roof into a home.

Absolutely beautiful!!

I love this....a jar filled with life's most intimate memories and treasures.
Wow, I don't think I have anything from age 9 except photos!

Helen,

This is beautiful.  I am in love with this poem - so am going to take a break from reading others right now.  I just want to savor this poem right now.
