Our oars are dipped in gold as we land
With sanguine stars twinkling in our wake
The dog swims snorting through the waves
And slips across the slimy stones
To shake himself in frenzy on the sand

We catch the breeze within our sail
Out from the shallows drifts a basking whale
He floats alongside, keeping pace
Then near the shores of Barra, veers away
With undulating form and flicking tail

The sea is full of leaping points of light
As dappled waves reflect the eventide
Our boat creeks at the harbour wall
With straining ropes and bobbing keel
We must embark for soon it will be night

We gather driftwood from the grassy slope
To give a salty sparkle to the flames
Thistle, foxgloves and wood sage grow
Among the cliffs, and seaweed lies
Along the tide-mark like a cordaged rope

Now the lighthouse begins to gleam
And from its lonely vigil in the west
Always the first to greet the traveller home
Like northern lights upon an autumn sky
Barra Head shines out its double beam

We look up to the dark eternity
Soft night winds blowing life into a fire
That scintillates into a million sparks
And as the yellow Harvest moon ascends
We listen to the magic music of the sea

This is such a lovely capture of the boat, the sand, the entire ambience of seaside, especially after sunset. I'll tuck this away for safe keeping in my library, to read again and again. Your poetry is sublimely beautiful!

I could read this over and over again ~ So that is a good indication that I should save it!!!

Your images were so vividly clear that I can close my eyes and envision myself living that experience. Thank you for taking me there!

This fills me with awe, dear Katriona. Your refined language makes the heart sway in sweet rapture.

Wonderful imagery, yes a keeper to read again when nostalgia calls.

I was curious about Barra Head and found it on wikipedia. Share it here for the other readers too:
"Barra Head, also known as Berneray, is the southernmost of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Within the Outer Hebrides, it forms part of the Barra Isles archipelago.
Originally, Barra Head only referred to the southernmost headland of Berneray, on which its lighthouse is located, but is now a common name for the entire island.

Thank you for the magic.
Love,
Margherita

Awwww such a fine and kind comment dear Margherita, and to think you would take your precious time and look up the very place I'm talking about, well I am gobsmacked !!  Yes I've spent many a holiday on the beautiful islands of Scotland. And not all of them are remembered with joy, because the weather can be pretty awful even in summer, and I'm not even mentioning the mosquitos (midges) as big as matchboxes !!!!.  Thanks again dear friend.

excellent imagery!

I am especially fond of the ending:

"Now the lighthouse begins to gleam
And from its lonely vigil in the west
Always the first to greet the traveller home
Like northern lights upon an autumn sky
Barra Head shines out its double beam

We look up to the dark eternity
Soft night winds blowing life into a fire
That scintillates into a million sparks
And as the yellow Harvest moon ascends
We listen to the magic music of the sea"

[Berneray (and the rest) are indeed most fine!]

significant, sustained applause for this 'penning' !!
