Finally, there were no more telephone lines
stretching across the blue, whipped cream sky.
The blacktop had become gravel long ago,
and the lost trees, the ones that perfumed the air
and directed the wind only minutes ago, were gone
somewhere beyond the brown rolling hill's soft, belying appearance.

I was going to write a vernal spring
onto the hot barren dirt,
for I had passed it on the way here,
knew the ripe orange blossom of its proof
and the grasses course green overture,
as if I were the damp, listening wind.

The endless seeming road was ahead and behind me
as I stood with the sun,
wanting to dig barefooted into the dust and rock
until I found what I knew
would quench my thirst.

But instead, I found that I wasn't thirsty.

Oh how you describe the afterthought of fire and rain.  Spring is eternal in you Marti, and you give us drink upon your words.

Loved this, and so very nice to read you again.

You have a talent for engaging the senses of a reader which heightens the reading experience. I could see, smell, and feel as you did. Your poems are always well-worth the wait, Martie Flowers!

Finding you are not thirsty is a growing process that comes slowly but well worth it.

I know those roads...
and the endless
and the seeming
and the sun.

Such long shadows...

You make me smile so large that even the
dark shadows smile...

The imagery is dynamic, and powerful.

I love the last part:

The endless seeming road was ahead and behind me
as I stood with the sun,
wanting to dig barefooted into the dust and rock
until I found what I knew
would quench my thirst.

But instead, I found that I wasn't thirsty.
