Prim, Prime Time, Oh Rose

Who but man woulds’t count, ‘tis true
the curl and color and winsome hue
of a prim and prime rose in glory,
yet, ‘tis woman who but would tell
true stories

~*~

and smiling I in all this while
beseech thee, love, with but a smile
for here is staid of heart, ‘tis true
while one smiles she thinks of you,
in glories

seized thus by most true held charms
t’would one devoted hold in her arms
any but that she thought not best?
Yet, and here I fear, I’ve failed first test
and sorry

be I, for in this failure that rings
would have been a voice in joysome sing
for in la petit morte, divided lives fell
both squandering time in lonesome hell,
sans glory…

Donne would say, and did he, indeed
in numbers primed and divided, decreed
that woman would take over their lot
and man, yes man, he would be besot
in stories…

…for the sounds within the heart of girl
lifts her through life in all its whirl
till woman stands before man and deed
and he, who wrote, yes, he paid in heed
and glory.

For truest is this, if truth would be but read
a woman indeed, would take man to stead
fast in her life if but he be solemn, true,
and hold to him close, and never rue
her glory.

~*~

Love every word, and really love the
ending like a sweet soft ribbon
to enfold the gentle tenderness,
and truth,

Friends,

Thank you for all of the wonderful comments.

I brought this back to share with you
because a friend of mine at my last position
recently lost his "Rose".

She was a fine companion, a true woman, a
dachshund.

Still, the poem fit both the feelings, and
the companionship.

Karilea, I am confused as to whether Rose is a human woman or a sausage dog (a dachshund) - or is "a dachshund" an Americanism meaning something other than a sausage dog?  You have captured the style of John Donne admirably.

Diana,

This poem was originally about a woman.

Then, Lindsay noted some old time work of
mine in this style so I thought I would
bring it back for him.

Only a day later, I shared it with another
fellow that I had worked with, who lost his
beloved Dachshund, Rose,
after sharing a good, long life with her by his side in his
red convertible. He always said, "she always
made the girls in other vehicles turn and
look at her. And of course, I thought they
were looking at me!"

While I understand it was confusing, hopefully
the recipients all enjoyed its intent.

Lindsay, so glad that you enjoyed!

Being "Dachshund" (Dackel) a German word I had no doubts about Rose being a sweet little dog.
Enjoyed your explanation too.
