Suddenly I'm old,
and this mind,
that feels the same as when I was nineteen,
struggles with that fact.

How did this happen?
I was just living my life,
dealing with day to day,
with the joys and pitfalls of our Path.
I tried to be a good friend,
a helpful neighbour,
a dependable father,
a sensitive lover,
and I suppose old age sneaked by me
when I wasn't looking.

Oh, I am happy and content
with my life:
I wouldn't change it
should some magic djinn
grant me that wish.
It is just that age surprised me
while I was otherwise occupied,
and I resent that
just a bit.

There are things left for me to do
that are more difficult for the elderly,
so I'll just try a little harder,
be a little more determined,
than the youth I thought I was.
I'll continue to work out with Joe Weider's help,
and take long walks with my friendly beagle,
and find excuses to run up and down stairs.
Watching my diet is fun,
and isn't it amazing how much garbage
manufacturers put in processed food:
astounding how many chemicals
find their way to our tables?

I'll stretch my mind through contemplating
the Universal Balance.
I'll try to understand why
so many of us just will not see
a larger Picture,
and work to make life better for all,
rather than blindly consuming, hating,
and seeking, rather than Enlightenment,
instant gratification.

I'm a senior now: I am old,
but that does not mean
I must become neo-conservative,
and wear polyester trousers,
hiked up around my chest.
I do not have to abandon
my nineteen year old heart.

Tomorrow I'll be older,
but in this joyous Now
I still am
me.

There are so many parts of your poem I can identify with.  I still have the mind of a ten-year-old and the rest of me is NOT cooperating one bit!

If this is any help, I still do all I want to do but pace it now.  Exercising the mind and body are key to this growing old stuff, (and lifting your fork less.)   Another is, always surrounding yourself with young people, they keep you young.  It definitely does suck when you finally realize you are not 20 anymore.

It too amazes me that the greed, lack of concern for the environment and our fellow man continues.  However, my granddaughter of 11 reminded me that each generation just does what the one before them did.  Sad to say, she is right.

You are only as old as your inner child.

So after resisting the urge to say "Haha your old!" (Sorry)

I do love this poem.

Beautifully captured.

Thank you all for your kind comments.  I must stress, however, that this work is not a lament:  I am happy with my age.  I have always, mentally, been a Peter Pan, although I have peers who have always been old men and women.  Point of view, and life outlook, I suppose.
Mysteria:  I work out daily on a wonderful Weider weight station, as well as going on 4 km walks with my beagle, Ranger.  Our family eats organic when possible, and shuns additives, and chemicals.  We eat little yeast, little sugar, and little salt, and have recently cut back on milk consumption. I am now, due to diet, almost completely arthritis free, lost 50 pounds and am back at my high school weight. I love my life!
Suthern:  Thank you.  I have a new extended warranty valid for the foreseeable future.
DS:  You got it, buddy.  Childish (or at least childlike)is the way to go.  Cheers.
ramisf:  Just like a bottle of single malt 15 year old Irish Bushmills or Jameson's.
Rachel:  That would be about 19, but without the distortion of raging hormones!
James:  Thank you kind sir.
latearrival:  Still the king of the disco, and rocking on.
2islander2: Oui, c'est vraie, mais c'est la bonne vie toute la même.  Sorry, French is just a tad rusty.
LostPoet:  If this is old, bring it on!  Thank you for your kind comments.
Namaste, all.
