In the space between moments

0 posted 2009-08-12 11:39 PM

Thick, simmering, folding around itself
the air drips fever-heat
down over huddled grasses

hypnotic is the seething sun
pulsing his moistened fervor
into every shaded corner—
nothing will mollify his wrath.

the Mother heaves her breast
yearning for a shimmer of rain
or a cotton-puff dream
to soften the too sharp glints

but she senses only heat
laying itself heavy across her chest
creeping into her mouth
and releasing it’s toxic swelter.

Krista,

You just wrote about our July - and as soon as August hit, we went into fall. Had frost this morning.  I prefer the frost to the heat.  This is good.

Odd, it was just the opposite for us (no frost though).  July was very chilly...I wore pants and long sleeves a lot of the time.  August, however, has been sweltering already.  It's a shock to the system.

~ Now that's what I'd call 'close'. Whew, bring on the cooling rain! lol

"or a cotton-puff dream

Thankfully, we have had a fairly cool summer and our air-conditioning bills have been cut in half this year!

Giving you a 'cool' hug,

Linda

I really admire this poem."Hypnotic is the seething sun " is my favorite part. I've been there. The glimpse up close of the "mother" was really nice  too. Made me feel it.

I love the imagery. I can take the heat sitting in front of the fan

Thank you for the kind comments, everyone.  Luckily, Minnesota is cooling off again, which makes me happy.
