A mile or so out west of town,
...towards the setting sun,
Is a place that oft I go,
...when my day is done,
At the bottom of a hill,
...lies a spring-fed pond,
Near its edge, a fallen log,
...of which I am quite fond,
For on that tree, each night I sit,
...and listen to the calm,
Of vespertine upon the prairie,
...to feel its soothing balm,
To see the shadows of the night,
...ensconce the Kansas plain,
And ruminate on things unknown,
...of things beyond explain,
I skip a rock across the pond,
...it sinks beyond my sight,
I turn and walk towards city lights,
...and leave behind the night.

I have never seen a prairie - I understand the night sky is incredible there.  I also had never seen the word "vespertine" - so you taught me a new word and showed me a glimpse of a world I have never seen.

Thank you.

Tim, this is truly captivating and ... if I had such a magical place nearby I would do what you do, sitting and letting the thoughts wander ... and watch the ripples after launching the stone.

Beautiful!

Love,
Margherita

Your poem was a delight to read.  I imagined being there, too.  Thanks for posting!

This is utterly divine poesy and I must say a true delight for me as first and foremost a nature writer to read this lovely picture poem this afternoon.

How nice to have such a magical place to spend time. I went to Texas once for a couple of days. I had never been anywhere that there were no mountains and the sky just meets the land, The sky looked incredible but it seemed strange not to see the mountains close by.
