I never thought to give it back
that part I found and knew ‘twas heart
because too I knew to bear the load
sometimes heavy, sometimes light,
but most times a delight
until the place where it should be
was clean and ready, new.

But should I part with someone’s heart
when that finder, keeper, me
thinks it will again fall short
and simply disappear
back into the annuls
of ancient history?

I took it out today and studied every vein,
every throb and beat, every shudder, shake
and turned it this way/that to highlight what it lacks
like a woman on the verge
of buying an antique.

There are cuts and scraps and rusted joints
somewhat like my own
and yet the flow of energy
like a river in full flood
spills over and encourages
the thief in me to lie.

Look, my hands are empty;
it’s not something you can see
but one day when you choose to feel
it’s me who has your heart
don’t ask for its return
because a thief will always lie
and keep the bounty safe inside!

When you find a heart that's a keeper ~ hang on to it for dear life ~ and keep it close to your own!

Of course it would be better if it was given and not stolen but what's a thief to do?

Hugs to you dear Linda.

Your heart is pouring

Good to know that a heart can be fragmented into endless pieces, remaining whole nonetheless. hmmmm ? Who said that?

In other words, never tire to LOVE LOVE LOVE. The hearts know, rest assured.

You girls make me smile! You charming thieves of hearts!

Dear Helen, I enjoyed you in this performance of your beautiful pen.

Love,
margherita

The heart goes on and on, the beat and loves rhythm are just an added bonus.

It is the very core of our being, the keeper of all the love we've ever known.

Lovely, lady Sunday~

Thanks everyone for reading and for commenting and, Lori, thanks for the "Lady Sunday".  It brings back memories - some good, some bad, but all of them will no doubt prove to have been worthwhile.

Love
Helen

Helen,

I think you hold many hearts.  I know you have mine when I read your poetry.  I love this one - I feel you in every word.
