Hey Troop
You made it out
And that’s what matters

You answered
The call to colors
A good man
You put on the uniform
And did the time

There might be scars
From now ancient wounds
And still you cringe
Every now and then
At the thought
Of how close you came

Yet now you’re free
Of all that enmity

Be glad old friend
You didn’t end up dead

Rotting in a trench
Or a house in which
It wasn’t worth
Being alive

I remember guys that were short would say they were getting promoted to civilian.  No matter what rank they were, civilian was higher.

At times, being in the service is like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer. You don't know how much it hurts until you stop.

Thank God we've always had the men willing to do so. They get my salute.
