She hovers and darts among river reeds,
frequents skunk cabbage marshes
as readily as Monet ponds.
The lovely Odonata
holds a commanding presence
in palatial manicured gardens,
gracefully gliding
in her opalescent attire,
the belle of Nature's Ball.

She has her own agenda,
is oblivious
to our wants
though our needs are similar.
She feeds on pesky mosquitoes
like she’s at an all-you-can-eat buffet,
and when sated, slowly darts away.

Odonata, green darner,
damsel fly, dragon fly,
glider...
by any name,
you are
friend.

Loved this...love dragon flys of all types, colors, sizes...you described them well...super glad they aren't bigger...we'd be in serious trouble as a race.

LOL, I'd rather enjoy seeing one the size of small fighter plane. Imagine how many skeeters she could take down!

excellent 'write'!

I am especially fond of:

"She hovers and darts among river reeds,
frequents skunk cabbage marshes
as readily as Monet ponds.
The lovely Odonata
holds a commanding presence
in palatial manicured gardens,
gracefully gliding
in her opalescent attire,
the belle of Nature's Ball(!)"

Once again, this talented author 'pens' a fine
tribute (and gives a 'voice') to another of Nature's
small but magnificent inhabitants.

serious and sustained applause!

You are a magical weaver of words and while reading you, the Odonata unfolds her wings and her beauty in nitid imagination.

Enjoyed this much!

Love,
Margherita

Hi Midnitesun, I wish there were many dragon flies where I live, so many mosquitoes here I cannot sleep without the mosquito repellant. I too love dragon flies for this reason. Nice write. Prasad

Kacy, I love all your poems, but my absolute favourites are your horse and nature poems.  I could feel the rich ambiance of Mother Nature setting the scene for the beautiful Odanata (I love that name, it just rolls off the tongue) to enter.  I just hated getting to the end of the poem, and read it through a couple more times to prolong the parting.

Again, you touched on something I was hungry for and didn't know it...

Dragonflies, lightning bugs, all the magickal wonders of my childhood that I do not see anymore. (Suburbia & "Mosquito Control" have pretty much done away with those, here.)

And I so miss my little house by the woods--I loved the lavendar colored dragonfly...

sighs, hugs, and thank you.

Another Oh, how I adore your poems about Nature. If only everyone could see what you see through your appreciative eyes. Well, reading your poetry is a good way for them to begin to do so!

Loving hug 'n a smile,
Linda

The only dragonflies I see these days are on my tiffany lamps. I miss the magick.
Love the poem.

Yo Midnitesun,

Yes, I always liked dragon flies when I lived in the country.  We don't have any here.  We probably need them.

I had no idea (but should have!) how many people no longer see dragonflies or fireflies, two of our most important summer friends! More proof that indiscriminate use of pesticides and other bug controls, combined with environmental degradation and global warming, has nearly decimated Gaia's natural defense systems. Already, we seem to have lost our native croakers/ribbit masters to a deadly virus...and still, some choose to believe we are doing 'ok' because we recycle a few items and plant a few trees, are starting to use energy more wisely (only because the price is so high).
I'm devastated with the overall global rate of species extinction, though I'm delighted there are a handful of success stories.  End of 'enviro-rant'....(for the moment)

This has been read and re-read in our studio, and everyone loves it. They are so much the essence of summertime, Midnitesun, these lovely little dragonfly and other insect friends.

WW, kaile, ArtSolstice
It's still in the 80's here, and the crickets are quite vocal at night. Two days ago I saw a hummingbird, a rare treat in this yard since I haven't yet hung a hummer-feeder. The nasty pesky gnats swarm at least twice a day, chasing me from the yard. LOL, you'd think they were monsters the way I fight with them! Oh well, they are a necessary part of the food chain.
