Lumpy oatmeal makes me crazy!

Cowed by a Rooster

My family had a couple chickens and a rooster who did not crow;
they lived out with the horses, sheltered from the wind and snow.
The rooster was the master and he kept those hens in line.
The chickens stayed out of my way – which suited me just fine.

I was a little girl back then and I was afraid of any kind of bird.
They darted quickly and frightened me, which my father found absurd.
We lived out in the country among trees growing full and strong.
I once heard my parents tell a friend that they bought it for a song.

“It” must have been that old house, sitting high on a hill alone.
The faucet water came in cold and there was no telephone.
It was a place like few had seen and even had no inside plumbing;
which leads to my story of the outhouse, the rooster and of me – running.

I didn’t like the chickens and the rooster took a strong dislike to me;
he’d chase me when he saw me and I would always try to flee;
but he was fast and he was mean, (maybe because he froze his toes)
He seemed to have a radar-sense and knew when I snuck out to go.

He would come around the corner and his beady eyes would shine,
then he would dart at me and try to peck at my behind.
I ran so fast and slammed the door, leaning against it I would gasp,
and think that when I was bigger I would finally – totally - kick his a$$!

One day a man came to visit and said he could use a chicken, maybe two.
My Dad said to take them with him and take the rooster for a stew.
It seemed that no one liked that bird; I felt sad to see him go.
But I remembered his beak pecking at me and how he’d chase me so.

I heard they couldn’t eat that stew; that it was far too tough
My mom that that they should have roasted him (after he was stuffed).
I didn't know, and didn’t care; I knew he was bad to the bone.
But I can still hear his wings flapping whenever I go home.

He haunts the hills and waits for me behind the darkened trees.
When I have to use the outside commode he still brings me to my knees.
To this day I don’t like birds - to the delight of those who know me.
But that rooster still lurks and waits for me - whenever I have to go pee!

Ali, That was absolutely brilliant! I laughed so much I nearly popped my stitches!!

I’ve met many birds who needed their backside kickin’
But none more so than that pesky chickin’
If that ‘Ol rooster had come after me
I’d have sold his carc-ass to KFC!

This is going in my collection to be read again, Thanks for the laugh….John X

Alison dear, you brought back childhood memories for me too with this brilliant verse. In Switzerland, our hens and their rooster had a separate "house" and ground around. I used to run forth and back outside, so the rooster got wild running after me, trying to catch me ... it was exercise for him and for me I thought. I only stopped when he was exhausted (bad girl!) But ohh, sometimes my stepfather would let the whole family out to enjoy the freedom of the meadow... and when I went after some fresh strawberries or such without knowing I risked much ...there he waited to take revenge on me... I can't tell you how we raced through the place, me yelling for somebody to rescue me ...  and he with that angry look that frightened me so!! One time I did not succeed in getting rid of him, so I ran through the entrance gate right out into the street (another risk!), then I stopped and looked back out of breath: I saw him running towards the gate and was about to run away when the cute guy took an arrest right at the gate and nearly fell flat, because of the speed he had gained. (yes just like Donald Duck!!) There we stood at a few meters' distance, watching each other's move ... he finally gave up and returned inside, but I waited a long while before daring to enter.

Thank you for this funny piece, dear Alison!

love

Terrific title for a terrifying ~ yet hysterically funny for an on-looker! ~ piece of writing!

Brilliantly penned! It elicited several guffaws from me, to be sure! I was also reminded of when I was a little girl visiting my great aunt's mausoleum of a home which was surrounded by chickens, roosters ~ cows and bulls ~ that were all out to get me! Gadzooks! One thing that is for certain, I avoided wearing the colour red! lol

Loved your story ~ and you told it soooo well!

Hugs with love,
Linda

This poem sure made my day. Reminds me of when a goose pulled down my pants to get the bread crumbs in my pocket. T.T

See, Sheli, birds are evil and should be feared!  I know that my aversion to them is valid.  I really detest roosters in particular!!!

Do you think I sould like I am going over the edge here?

John,

If he should have gone to KFC ... don't, don't, DON'T take your daughter there!  Ewwww.  The thought of eating that rooster (even breaded and fried).  Ick.

And, yeah to the moose comment.  You make me laugh too -- glad your stitches remained intact.

I just lost it laughing when I read your story.  I think maybe they were rooster brothers or something.  Vile, evil (notice the two words are anagrams of each other .. hmmmmm) creatures!

Linda,

We had a horse that used to wait for me to come home and then would chase me across the field and try to bite me. He wasn't our horse actually, we were taking care of him.  He was pretty loco.  I remember my dad chasing him across that field after seeing me run home.  My dad had a long board and, man, that horse could run.  Actually, so could my dad!

Love you,
Alison

Alison,
When I was six or seven my father bought 50 baby chicks (all roosters) at an auction with the idea of raising them to eat. I cared for them, raised them in a box with a light bulb at first, and as they grew  they followed me everywhere. We had to lock them up so they didn't follow me onto the school bus. Needless to say we didn't eat them. That would have sent me into therapy. I look at it his way...we eat them so they have more to fear.

Alison,

I too have an old red rooster story...so I had to chuckle over your story, especially with the old farm house and all.
